It was midnight, but Nielsen was still wide awake. He could feel it, the universe began to spin once again tonight. And it was spinning fast. He planned on going to bed soon, but didn't dare to leave the eyes all over his room unsupervised. 'Really, since when were there so many floating eyes in my living room?' he hummed to himself. It wasn't the first time he has seen them, but they were particularly annoying lately, breaking his glasses and eating his gummy bears. 'How do they even eat?' he wondered. It was about time to finally head to bed when the window next to his giant grey couch shattered. It would be good to say that he lived on the 6th floor of an apartment building in the middle of the town. Suddenly, a weird looking young lady (or a man? Who knew...) was standing in front of him. She was very pretty, with big eyes, long thick black hair and a giant pair of bat-like wings on her back. Nielsen didn't panic, of course. He was too old for that, anyway. No, instead, he politely offered the lady a drink and a cookie. She stared at him for a moment, surprised, before answering his question.
"Don't want any drinks. Well, I hoped to see someone younger... Not an old geezer." The girl looked at him as if judging something and then smiled for herself. "Guess I don't have much of a choice now, do I?"
"You are very rude, young lady, you know? I'm proud to have made it to my eighties. I don't really know what you want from me, but have I told you about my grandson? He's such a lovely child! Almost an adult, now, but that doesn't matter. He's very kind and polite, unlike you. What are you here for?" Nielsen thought that he was doing very good, given the current situation. He even told the bat-lady about his grandson! Oh, how he loved his grandson... But there would be time for that later. He should do something about the girl, first.

"Sorry, sorry, no need to get all prickly. Name is Renita – I know I just broke into your apartment in the middle of the night but there are some bad people after my special power over alternate universes 'n I've decided to put all my faith on you to save everything." The lady gave him a hopeful look and smiled.
Nielsen couldn't refuse her, of course. Her name reminded him too much of his grandson's to let her leave without helping her. He decided to listen to the lady's request and let her stay over for the night. That was her request, right? Or did she want something else from him? Well, who cares?
Nielsen looked around the living room. The eyes multiplied and now there were twice as many as before, some walking plants appeared as well and there was glass all over the floor. He happily started humming a tune to himself and looked at Renita expectantly. She didn't have the slightest idea what was expected of her, but it looked like the geezer would cooperate, so she decided to explain her situation to him.

"So, it's pretty simple. There is a finite number of universes out there and they are overlapping each other. We are currently in 0568, and I'm from 9834, but that's not really important. I have the power to open gates between those universes, but some gates open randomly, and one is in your home. That would explain all those weird things in here. And you see, I have a problem. There's this giant slug after me."
"Not to judge, but why is there a giant slug after you? Is he your ex-boyfriend?"
"No, you idiot. The slug wants my power for his evil plan to take over the world."
"Evil plan? Tell me about that! I love evil plans!"
Renita sighed. It looked like this would be a long conversation. She didn't want this old geezer to get caught up in her problems, but the gate was in his home – there was no getting around it.

"Look, his evil plan is pretty simple, but I really need to know if you will cooperate-"
Nielsen cut her off: "If you tell me everything, I will help you. But there will be one more demand."
"Fine." It surprised her how decisive the geezer now was. Was he senile? Was he not? She couldn't figure him out. She decided it will be easier to tell him everything about herself, the slug and his plan rather than fighting the slug by herself.

"Alright. I am part of a secret inter-dimensional organization. What we do is none of your concern. The thing is, I was spying on someone, and now he's after me. He also wants to gain my powers and get a hold of this gate in your living room. He will come here soon. The guy I'm talking about is a giant slug – literally. I'm not sure what his plan exactly is, but I heard he's pretty talkative, so maybe he will tell us if we ask. I want you to kill this slug – or at least get him to abandon his plan, if you think that would be easier. Can you do it?" Renita wasn't sure how exactly the geezer could help her, but she didn't have much of a choice. When she looked up at his face, Nielsen was smiling happily.
"Well, that explains a lot. Of course, I shall help you, young lady, but it will cost you." He said it with such an ominous undertone, Renita was actually scared what he would want.
"You need to get my grandson – have I mentioned my grandson? Such a good kid. His name is Remeron. He's very smart and he's studying at a prestigious university overseas. I'm so proud of him! Anyway, you will get my grandson a cat, he always wanted one. Preferably more than one." Nielsen was beaming with happiness at the thought of his beloved grandson getting a cat. Why, was anyone's guess.
