"Kat? Kat?" I asked. I shook her shoulders in order to try and get her attention. "Katherine Harding!"

Uh-oh. I think I broke Kat.

She froze. Completely paralyzed with bewilderment. Obviously, my plan to give Kat a surprise birthday party worked. On the minus side of my victory, she might be dead. Frozen. Stunned.

I took a hold of her lifeless body and maneuvered her down the steps into the main ballroom area. The last thing anyone needed was for Kat to fall on her face in front of all these people. Random strangers. That would be so embarrassing. However, in Kat's mind, I do not think she would think it is all that embarrassing.

Henry was the first to rush to Kat's aid. He gently placed a kiss on her cheek and told her yet again, happy birthday. The lovesick puppy has said it a hundred times today. It was adorable.

Kat, Seraphina, Henry, and Gabe went to dance; however, I stayed behind, because I hated dancing with a burning passion.

Once at the masquerade ball was plenty in a lifetime for me.

The ballroom looked perfect. Everything Kat loves is here. Half of the room was decorated from various horror movies throughout the decades. The other half contained anything that seemed wizardly enough to be from Harry Potter.

Kat spun around holding a magic wand in one hand and a bloody butcher's knife in the other hand. The girl felt like her own version of a princess tonight.

"Nice work," Dominick said. It was hard to hear him over the music, but I was able to hear him give me a compliment. "With the Winter Ball being less than a week away, Father needs you to remain focused after tonight."

"Touching he couldn't tell me any of this himself," I scoffed.

"Please don't make this a demeaning father-daughter situation. We all want to make this the best Winter Ball possible in your honor. Plus, I'm the one who told him to keep his distance as a father," Dominick explained.

"Why would you do that?" I asked.

I had half a mind to punch Dominick across the face. How dare he tell my birth father that he should keep his distance? I spent nineteen years of my life wondering about what kind of father I had. Now that I have met him, there is a possibility that I leave this country and never see him again.
