The Boss

Could this day possibly suck any more than it already had?

As if it wasn't enough that you had barely slept, and then when you finally managed to fall asleep, your alarm went off just two or three hours later. Then, when you got out of bed you stumbled over the paperwork you'd been going over that must've fallen onto the floor when your eyelids were finally heavy enough, so you hurt your knee — lucky enough to catch yourself on your hands — and just barely avoiding a face-plant with your hardwood floor.

Once that was out of the way, you got dressed only to realize once you had put your shoes on that you had overslept by about an hour and that you were running late. Quickly gathering all the papers still scattered on your bedroom floor, you stuffed them into your purse before rushing out. This is where the start of your day became worse because it had been raining, you didn't have a car nor an umbrella, so you had to run with a heavy purse, in your black peacoat, IN HEELS, to your office that was a couple of blocks away from where you lived.

Then when you arrived at work — completely drenched — your boss had immediately requested your presence in a meeting that would start in just five minutes. Not giving you enough time to try and make yourself look even remotely presentable, or even get a damn cup of coffee.

So with a chill rushing over your spine from the cold and wet clothes that were stuck to your back, you hung your soaked peacoat over the back of your desk chair and turned it toward the radiator, grabbed the papers you had stuffed into your purse — praying to any God that would listen — hoping they weren't ruined like your clothes and mood had been and rushed toward the conference room your boss had requested your presence.

The meeting was not exactly important for you to attend, you were the boss' assistant so you barely had anything to do other than sit in a chair while incredibly uncomfortable as your clothes slowly dried while they stuck to your skin like glue on paper.

So, when your boss announced that everyone could take a short recess to fill their coffee mugs, you were hopeful to get to do the same. This was a day that could use the mood-lifter coffee usually brought you. But before you could even step out of the room, your boss called your name, forcing you to freeze in your spot.

"Yes, sir?" You asked, praying that he wouldn't add to your already sour mood.

"I have been running this company for a couple of years now and as you know, I tell every new employee that they represent the company and so I ask each one of them to dress a certain way." He paused for a moment, allowing his eyes to move over my body from head to toe and back up. The grimace on his face not at all obvious... for blind people that is. Before I could interject or try to defend my appearance, he continued. "I have a feeling you might be aware of the fact that you don't look good right now, but just to be sure I wanted to make a point of it and request that you do not show up like this ever again. The image we carry is the image of my company, we have to be at our best."
