Dorothea let out a genuine laugh—a sound that had not been heard in so long that it sent a ripple of silence through the air.

Inside the Cullen home, conversations came to an abrupt halt, heads turned, and even a few gasps escaped. It felt like a lifetime since they had last heard her voice, and longer still since she had laughed. But beneath the sound of her amusement, there was something else—something only those who truly knew her would recognize.

A lingering sadness woven into the joy, as if every chuckle carried the weight of years lost.

Unaware of the attention she had drawn, Dorothea turned her eyes toward Seth, watching as he practically vibrated with excitement at her presence. His enthusiasm was infectious, his energy boundless, and she couldn't help but let a small smirk tug at the corners of her lips.

Her golden eyes flickered as she studied him, her voice teasing as she tilted her head. "You're adorable. Has anyone ever told you that?"

Seth immediately gasped, his entire body freezing before he scrambled to stand taller, puffing out his chest in defiance. "That's not true! I'm gonna be a man one day!" he declared, his brows furrowing as he tried to hold a serious expression.

Dorothea chuckled softly, reaching out and ruffling his dark hair, her fingers threading through the strands in a gentle, almost affectionate motion. The young wolf had been bouncing just moments before, but at her touch, he stilled, the warmth of her hand instantly calming him. His eyes fluttered shut for a second, and for a brief moment, he leaned into her touch like an overgrown puppy soaking up affection.

Their lighthearted moment, however, was short-lived.

"Man, I can smell them from all the way out here."

The dry, unimpressed voice came from the treeline, drawing their attention as Leah emerged from the darkness, her sharp gaze flicking between Dorothea and Seth with an almost exasperated expression.

Before either of them could respond, another presence made itself known.

The sound of heavy footsteps echoed behind them, and the distinct scent of wolf and earth filled the air before Jacob's voice rang out, his tone laced with immediate hostility.

"What the hell are you doing here?"

His words were sharp, cutting through the air like a blade, and the way he positioned himself—standing just behind Seth but making sure to keep his distance from Dorothea—made it clear that he wasn't here for pleasantries.

Dorothea didn't flinch at the aggression in his voice. If anything, she simply lifted an eyebrow, her expression betraying neither surprise nor amusement. She had expected this reaction.

Leah, on the other hand, stepped forward, arms crossed over her chest as she replied flatly, "I'm not gonna let my little brother get himself killed."
