Today is the first day of 11th grade. My junior year. Wow.
"Time really does fly, doesn't it, Tikki?" I say to my kwami. It feels like just yesterday I was starting 10th grade. I was so innocent and naive. I was just a baker's daughter with ambitions of becoming a famous fashion designer. I didn't know my best friend Alya, and I wasn't Ladybug.
"It seems so, Marinette," she replies, "But if you keep wasting time laying in your bed, you're going to be late for school. I know you have a reputation for being tardy, but it's literally the first day. Make a good impression on your new teacher!"
I look at the clock, and it says 7:50 a.m. "Tikki! It's so late! How did this happen? I set my alarm for 6:45, so I would have time to get ready and be at school early!"
"Marinette, you pressed the snooze button eight times!" Tikki retorts.
I've never seen her this sassy. It's actually a little funny. I start to laugh--oh right! I have to get to school. I sit up and decide to step off my bed as if it was on the floor. "Ouch! That hurt." I fell. How could I forget that I have a loft? Over the past year, one thing hasn't changed. I'm still a clumsy mess.
"Marinette, sweetie, are you okay?" my mom asks from downstairs. I guess my fall was pretty loud.
"Yeah, mama. I'm fine!" I yell, "I just fell off my loft!" I let out a small chuckle.
"Okay! Just wanted to make sure you're alright!"
I quickly get up off the floor and run to my closet. I grab my usual outfit: a black blazer, white t-shirt, pink jeans, and ballet flats. I put it all on and dash over to my sink to brush my teeth and wash my face. I grab two hair ties and pull my hair into pigtails, just like every other day. I look at the clock. It's now 8:10. Wow, I got ready in 20 minutes.
"Tikki, a new record!" I smile.
"Good for you. Now hurry!"
I grab my school bag and purse and run down the stairs. Tikki flies into my purse as I enter the bakery. I grab a croissant from behind the counter and head towards the door.
"Bye Mama! Bye Papa!" I yell as I run down the street. I was sprinting as fast as humanly possible. Anyone who saw me probably thought I was in the middle of a race.
"Phew," I say as I walked into my school, "I'm not late!" I check my phone and it says 8:20. I have 10 minutes until school starts. Forget not being late. I'm early! I begin to look for Alya, but then I see a familiar red car pull up in front of the school. The door opens, and red sneakers pop out. Before I got to see more, someone turned me around and into a hug.
"Alya!" I shout. "I missed you so much!"
"Girl, I missed you too!" she replies. "Check this out. We're in the same class again. So is Nino and Adrien." She smirks.
"That's great!" We start walking up to room 212, our new classroom.
It seems like everyone from Ms. Bustier's class is here. How cool is that! Alya and I sit in the second row behind Adrien and Nino.
Adrien turns around, "Hey Alya! Hey Marinette! How are you guys doing?"
"I"m doing great!" I reply. I turn to Alya, and she has some goofy grin on her face.
"Since when can you talk to Adrien like a normal human being?!" Alya whisper-yells. "Girl, that's crazy!"
I just laugh nervously, and then the bell rang. But Alya's right. I'm able to talk to Adrien without getting all flustered. It's weird. I don't get butterflies in my stomach anymore. We saw each other a bit over summer break, often with his now ex-girlfriend, Kagami. I always got my words all jumbled around the two of them. I just thought it was because I was still crushing on Adrien. But now, I don't know.
"Hi, class! I'm Mrs. Monet. I'm your teacher this year," my new teacher says, "I can't wait to get to know all of you better!" She has long, brown hair pulled back with a clip and pink, square glasses. She's wearing a grey plaid blazer, rolled up to her elbows, with a white blouse and blue jeans. She seems like a kind and cheerful person, like Ms. Bustier. And I do appreciate her sense of fashion. I think I'm going to like having her as a teacher.
Mrs. Monet continues speaking, "This year, we have a student who's new to the public school system, so everyone, be nice. This is Kagami Tsurugi."
Butterflies. I feel my face get hot. Mrs. Monet is still talking, but I can't hear a thing. Everything around me gets drowned out and there's just Kagami. Her freckled cheeks and beautiful brown eyes that I can just get lost in. Her slightly grown-out, black hair lays on her shoulders. She's wearing her white blazer and red, plaid skirt. And today it just looks especially perfect on her.
I start hearing Mrs. Monet say something along the lines of Kagami needing a buddy to show her around today. The next thing I know my body is taking control of itself and I start saying, "I'll be her buddy! She can hang out with me all day!" I flash a quick smile.
"That's great. What's your name?" Mrs. Monet asks.
"M-Marinette. I'm Marinette." I'm stuttering. What's happening?
"Marinette, okay. Why don't you sit in the back with Kagami today."
"Okay." I stand up and walk with Kagami towards the back row. My face is burning and I don't need a mirror to know that I'm bright red. My heart is rapidly beating and I'm more nervous than I ever was with Adrien. This feeling. It's so strong. I'm so confused by what's happening to me. All I know is that it's not Adrien I like anymore.
