"Yes, the arrangements has to be made soon before tonight."
"And should it be sent to you, Ms. Ryder?" The receptionist, asks.
"No, it should be sent to Mr. Grant. I need it before tonight, remember. Goodbye." I decline the call, place it on the desk and take out my black folder and read through the number of bank accounts of each member of FRB.
My conference phone rings, which is only used for meetings or such purposes. "Hello?"
"Ms. Ryder, there's a man at the reception and also says that he claims to be your father." The new receptionist says, unsure.
I roll my eyes, until I realize,"what is this man's disguise?" I ask carefully.
"Umm... A plain shirt and jeans?" She says hesitantly.
"I'm on way." I say, hanging up the phone and rush towards the lift and press the button arrowing down. I wait patiently, kind of anticipated, why wouldn't he wear his uniform? Did he lose his job? No way. Is he finally embarrassed of wearing it all the time to my office? The lift opens for me to step in, I press the ground floor. My mind is occupied with thoughts, I can't even think straight.
As the lift doors slide open, I immediately get out and walk out through the main doors to the lobby. I look around, no sight of my dad to be seen. I walk over to the receptionist, Helen.
"Where's the man?" I ask.
"He said that he'll be waiting outside."
"Right, thank you."
I step outside, cold winds hitting me from behind giving in the result of my hair swaying forward, hiding my face.
"Thought of actually coming to see me?" A deep and very recognizable voice says.
"Thought of finally show up without a show off?" I reply as I turn around crossing my arms against my chest, raising an eyebrow.
He chuckles, closing his eyes. "You never fail to amuse me"
"What is it that you want?" I question ignoring his last statement.
"I want you to come with me for a vacation, both of you." He says, referring to my adopted son, Eric and I.
"Okay, bye dad, duty calls." I say immediately and turn back to open the door to the lobby.
"Wait. It's not for another case." I stop.
"Oh, then probably for Rachael."
"No, would you listen to me for few minutes before you leave, like you do."
"Like I do?" I laugh. "You mean, like you do. You don't leave, you abandon me, and Eric. You couldn't even take him as your son, when he got hit by amnesia. And I had to take care of him on my own. When you surprisingly took him as your grandson and he wanted to spend time with you, the same time, your wife, Rachael wanted to. Who did you spend time with dad?" I shout, grinding my teeth, having hands turn into fists, ready to punch this bastard.
He looks down, almost ashamed, "I said, who?!"
"Rachael."
"Exactly. And now you want me to listen to you?" I despise him, so much.
"I want to make it up for all that time I have abandoned you. It's a trip to Washington D.C. for a few days."
As I was about to speak, he cut me off. "It does not involve any case or Rachael."
"Why there?"
"I've heard Eric wanting to go there." But he has never wanted to be there, or anywhere for that fact.
"See it as a second chance? I've already lost Lara, I don't want to lose you, too."
"I--" I had nothing much to say.
"Think about it." He say, placing his hand on my shoulder.
"Okay." I reply and he leans ,in to give a kiss on my forehead.
"Don't." stepping back, away from him.
He nods and leaves crossing the road, and gets in his car and drives away leaving me standing on the pavement with thoughts of despair, hatred and second chances.
