Kyser eats from his bowl of fruit, oblivious to my meeting with Cyrus just a few hours ago.
I've only started eating when he reaches for a napkin, patting the edges of his lips rather neatly. I roll my eyes at the dramatic gesture.
"So," he clears his throat suddenly, eyes coming up to meet my own. This is the first he's acknowledged me all morning. "About yesterday."
I suck in a breath. Does he know I met with Cyrus? Will he be angry? How did he figure it out? My anxiety roams wild, but Kyser does not bring anything up about my midnight endeavors.
"I'm sorry I left like that. I was taken aback when you brought up Rene so suddenly, and I didn't know what to say," Kyser explains, setting his napkin over his plate. He leans back in his chair casually.
I can't help but feel foolish, being so caught up thinking about my meeting with Cyrus that I completely forgot about the previous day's events. Kyser disappeared, avoiding my question.
"How did my great-grandmother find you when you were dying?"
She possessed the same ability as me, to communicate with spirits. However, Kyser claimed to have been saved by Rene when he was dying, and since he can't travel to the mortal realm then that must mean that she was already in the immortal realm when she saved him from dying. Either she brought herself here, or someone did it for her.
And after what Cyrus told me, about Kyser possibly being untruthful, I can't help but feel even more skeptical of him now.
"Did she have the ability to bring herself to the immortal realm?" I ask, biting into a dewy strawberry, its juices dripping down the side of the silver fork. I wipe my hands on a napkin.
I am no longer scared of Kyser. He's powerful, but he knows more than he's letting on which makes me feel doubtful. He will not hurt me, but that does not change his nature. He is dangerous.
Beware of his rage.
There is no room for fear, if I want to get information out of him.
"No, she never had that sort of ability. No mortal can do anything of that sort," Kyser answers, without hesitation. His brows come together, deep in thought. "She died, like you, actually. That's how I came to meet her, in the first place. The Creator brought her directly to me, here."
I frown, anger and confusion churning their way through my being. Kyser is blatantly lying to me, at this moment. Illumi confirmed with me that Rene is indeed very much alive.
Before my angry thoughts can stray any further, Kyser sits upright in his chair. He continues,
"The Creator came to me in a dream and bestowed me with a duty to personally look after a newly arrived spirit. Rene. She died during childbirth, leaving the mortal realm moments after your grandmother was born. That is how I came to meet her," Kyser explains slowly. "I was never told any details, simply that I had to ensure Cyrus could never get to her, or else I would be punished severely."
"Why?" I ask, wrapping my arms around myself.
The anger within me has since subsided, and been replaced with a crude interest. Kyser's explanation is too distinct to be a lie. But how is it possible that Rene is now alive if she really did die. Could it be that someone was able to bring her back to life?
"I was never told why I had to look after her. Rene would barely ever speak to me about her life before dying, consumed in grief, I assume," a fringe of dark hair falls over his forehead as he speaks, purple eyes blazing beneath the sunlight. "She was somehow already knowledgeable of the many realms, and of immortals, but acted like she didn't for a long time. I never pried."
