New York, New York. Such a wonderful place. We're quite known for many remarkable things. The shopping, the hustle and scurrying on the busy streets that notoriously never sleep. Yet, have you ever wondered if there is more to the city of dreams? Have you truly wondered what lies behind the closed doors of New York's most elite?
Well, let's settle back to a feud that was stirred many decades ago.
The Upper East Side versus The Upper West side.
You see, it has always been told that money talks, but that doesn't mean it all speaks the same native language. Here in New York, we describe it as old money and new money.
The Upper East Side... the area where I live, and no, I most certainly do not say that with pride, is considered the term 'old money'. The Upper East Siders have always been wealthy, and will most likely always will be. They pride themselves in keeping the money in their pesky families, passing it along the line of generations.
Their grandparents never had to worry about finances, and neither will their grandchildren.
Old money doesn't care about you, or what anyone has to think as they have nothing to prove of value. East Siders have this, dare I say, the lack of self awareness. It can be difficult to relate to them because of the impenetrable bubble they live in, where everything is champagne and caviar, vintage watches, and expensive designer bags.
Now, the Upper West Side. Well, they're something out of the ordinary.
Less tuxedo, more flashy, hip, and artsy if you will. I mean they are extraordinarily wealthy, don't get me wrong.
Yet alas, it's new money. And new money has attitude.
Upper West Siders are usually a younger crowd of individuals whom were once just ordinary New Yorkers. They have built businesses and companies from the ground up, and in turn have rapidly accumulated much value of wealth.
Not always, but most of the time it's first generational wealth. So they didn't grow up with the privilege of this money. This whole world is very new to them.
They tend to flaunt their funds. Name and price drop any chance they get. Upper East Siders tend to be a bit more frugal with their money in hopes of keeping the funds in the family forever.
But Upper West Siders spend like there is no tomorrow, with the mindset of "Hey, if I made all of this money once, I can most certainly do it again."
Much like everything in life, their is good and evil that come with each side. West Siders don't like East Siders. They say we are old and snobby.
My grandmother, who was even more of a pretentious, snob than my own Mother, used to say that West Siders needed a passport and immunization before entering the East Side.
And it's all quite ridiculous if you were to ask me. But alas, no one ever asks me.
