11 Years Later....
I am now 18 years old graduating with honors and a scholarship for Columbia University. It was after graduation and I was waiting for my adopted mom to finish talking to my principal. I got a text from an unknown number and it was kinda weird. I opened it up and it was my caseworker from Children's Services.
"Hey, Avani. This is Miss Tiara. Congratulations on graduating! How are you?" The text read. She's such a sweet lady. I decided to text her back just to be nice.
"Hey, Miss Tiara. Thank you! I've been good, how about you?"
"I've been good. There's something I wanted to talk to you about, would you be able to come down to the children's services building later on?"
That's weird, what does she want to talk to me about? I've been good and I'm now able to take care of myself. I'm very thankful for my adopted mom because she took care of me and protected me since I was 7.
"Sure. I'm on my way now. I will be there with my mom." I texted her back.
"Alright, that's fine. I'll see you soon, sweetheart."
I put my phone back in my purse and went back to get my mom so we can leave. Before I can go get her, my boyfriend, Devin, came up to me and kissed me on my cheek. We've been together since junior year which was his first year at Westland High School.
"Hey, babe. What you about to do today?" He asked me, holding my hand. I looked at him and smiled and kissed his hand. I love this boy so much.
"I'm about to go see my caseworker at the Children Services building. She wants to talk to me about something. Maybe after that, we can hang out later." I said. He smiled at me and kissed me.
"Of course, baby, just text me when you're home and I'll come over tonight." He said, walking back to his mom and dad. I waved at his parents and went back to my mom.
"Mom, are you ready to go? I have to be somewhere." I said, putting my arm around her shoulder. She was blushing like a motherfucker because she had a big crush on my principal.
"Yeah, sweetie. Well, Mr. Owens, I will see you on Sunday." She said, smiling from ear to ear. I guess she scored herself a date. My mom and dad have been separated for 3 years and my dad been in a relationship for a year now. It's about time my mom moved on.
I waved goodbye and we walked to the car. I wonder what she wants to talk to me about. I haven't seen her since that night they came and got me.

*At The Children Services Building*
We walked in the building and Miss Tiara walked over to us with a lady who looks kind of familiar. The lady was staring hard at me which made me feel so uncomfortable. She had bruises on her arms that look old. I wonder who she is and what happened to her.
"Hi, Miss Tiara." I said and gave her a hug. She returned the hug and gave my mom a hug.
"Hi, Avani and Miss Williams, how are y'all?" She said, walking us towards her desk. The lady was still with her.
"We've been good. I'm just so proud of my baby for graduating and being a better version of herself after everything she's been through. She's a strong young woman." My mom said, holding my hand and giving it a little squeeze. I smiled and gave her hand a squeeze back.
"Congratulations, Avani. But I would like to introduce someone to Avani who've been wanting to meet her since she was 15." Miss Tiara said, which left me confused. My mom didn't look confused, she looked worried.
"Who?" I said, with a little smile.
"Avani, meet your birth mother, Vanessa Drake." She said with a huge smile on her face. My smile quickly dropped my face as I looked at her. Why did she want to come back now? I finally found peace with myself and she shows up?
"Hi, baby. I missed you so much." My birth mother said, trying to reach out for my hand. I looked at her with the most disgusted look on my face. She thinks shit's sweet?
"Why do I have to meet her? It's like you just trapped me into meeting her." I said, with anger in my voice. Seeing her opened up every broken part in my heart. It's like stabbing into the healed cut wound all over again. It hurts seeing her.
"She just wanted to see you because she was hoping to have another chance with you." Miss Tiara said.
"Where was she when I was 7 years old, crying in your arms, for her to come back and get me. Where was she when I lost my innocence from 5-7? I was raped because of her decision to give me up for adoption! But she wants a second chance?" I said, with tears streaming down my face. My birth mother had her face in the palm of her hands. She was crying.
"She chose Tommy over me, her own fucking daughter!" I said. My adoptive mom hugged me and was crying with me. This shit hurts. Me having to say that my mom chose another man over me is crazy.
"Avani, I didn't choose Tommy over you. I didn't know how to raise you." My birth mom said.
"Yes, you did. Tommy didn't want me there anymore because he wanted to do shit that doesn't involve me." I said, with animosity dripping from every word that came out of my mouth.
"Miss Tiara, I think it's wise if Avani and I just go home. Avani is not ready to meet that lady so it's best if we leave that decision to her to make." My adoptive mom said.
"That lady? Bitch, I'm her fucking mother! She came out of my pussy, not yours!" My birth mother said to my adoptive mother.
"You're not my mother. She's my mother. She's my mother because she was there all those nights I would cry. She was there when I almost tried to kill myself when I was 13. She was there when I almost died in a car accident 2 years ago. She was there for me every step of the way. She's my mom because she didn't choose a man over her kids. She's my mom because she didn't let a man who is not my father beat the fuck out of me when he wanted to. She's my mom because she doesn't hit or yell at me for every little thing. So stay in your place." I said, standing up. My birth mother was quiet like a mouse because I just put her in her place.
