A/N: I do not own criminal minds or any of its plotlines. I simply am modifying it and adding my own twist to certain things therefore some things may be wrong in my book or changed because I've changed the time frame so that the series began in 2017. I appreciate constructive criticism but I would like you to understand that the plot of this book is that Spencer was a very different person in college as a result of his friendship with the OC so I don't want people commenting about how something is out of character for him as that is the point. Thanks and when some topics that may be triggering come up I will try to put a disclaimer but if I miss one please feel free to inform me. ~Jess
TW: Mentions of Sexual Assualt/rape
People say that when you lose the person you love, time stops. Spencer Reid had always heard that saying but he had never experienced it before. They say that when your significant other dies, you can feel it even before you get the news but that isn't true. Spencer can attest to that. Time doesn't stop and it doesn't slow down it just feels shitty. Like your entire world is crumbling down around you and it's too late to try and salvage anything because it's already gone.
Everyone always talks about what it's like after they lose their significant other. What they were doing when they got the news and how everything after was a blur. Nobody ever talks about before. All that Spencer can think about is before as he sits in the hospital cursing the very names of George Foyet and Aaron Hotchner. He can't help but wonder if he could've done something different. If he had insisted on Amanda coming home with him after that last grueling case. If he had gone to check on her and Aaron instead of Emily. But he hadn't. He had been too focused on the case to worry.
All that got him was a bullet in his knee and the loss of the love of his life. He can feel the team watching him as he sits there. After all, he had blamed what happened to Amy on Hotch but to Spencer, that made sense. It was Aaron who had told the reaper that Amanda figured it out. It had been Aaron that involved Amanda in the case that Harrison had told her to stay out of. Reid and Prentiss may have fed her information but they never asked for her input, they just wanted to keep her updated in case she got to join the investigation. Despite this, he knows it's not Hotch's fault, but it's easier to blame someone he can see. It grounds him. It stops him from thinking about before.
12 Hours Earlier
Spencer was sleeping comfortably in his bed when he got the call. He was a bit surprised to find that it was JJ calling to tell him they had a case rather than Hotch but doesn't think much of it as he crawls out of bed taking note that it's 8:30 in the morning despite them supposedly having the day off after getting back from Canada at around midnight and heading home around 1. Reid rushes to get dressed and as he grabs a button-up from his closet he can't help but grin at the fact that he's missing a few. Amanda has a habit of wearing them home and not returning them.
Spencer doesn't really care because he likes the idea of her wearing his shirts, even when he isn't around. It's proof that she's really his and that she doesn't plan on leaving him anytime soon. Once he finally finishes getting ready, he's out the door and on his way to the address that JJ sent him on his phone. He frowns as he looks at the outdated device and wonders if Amanda is right and he should upgrade. Even though he doesn't care for technology and prefers the phone he has, it's smaller than her iPhone and he can't facetime her like he sees her do with Lacey and Kristen.
That thought alone is enough to convince him and he decides that after this case, he'll go with Amanda to the Apple Store and pick out an iPhone. He smiles at the thought of her excited squeal when he tells her at the crime scene. Except he never gets the chance. When he arrives at the crime scene in DC he's surprised to find that he's the first one there besides JJ. Usually, Hotch was the first onto a scene and Amanda lived closer to this scene than he did unless she had moved into her mansion.
