            DAISY MERCER HAS BEEN TOLD HER WHOLE LIFE that vampires are the enemy. Witches are trustworthy. Daemons, well, daemons aren't even worth remarking upon. But vampires would kill you without a second thought. That was what her mother taught her as she brought her up and helped her learn how to use the magic that runs through her veins, the magic that runs through the veins of everyone in the Mercer family. And she's never had much of a reason to question it. She's never met a vampire for more than two seconds, always quick to turn the other direction when she identifies one in her line of sight, and every coven she's ever been a part of wholeheartedly believes that witches are the only creatures with truly good intentions.

            THEN DIANA BISHOP COMES ALONG. Somehow, by merely asking for it, this simple witch is able to summon the centuries-missing Book of Life, which legend says contains the origins of all creatures. How they all came to be. What could make them stop being. The Book of Life has long been sought after by witches, vampires, and daemons alike for these reasons. Diana doesn't know how she was able to call it up but refuses to do it again and even allies herself with Matthew Clairmont, vampire — breaking the Covenant that forbids interspecies relationships in the process. So Diana Bishop becomes the target of the Congregation and an enemy of the Oxford coven.

            MEANWHILE DAISY MERCER, BOTANIST AND WITCH, has a chance encounter with one of the vampires Matthew Clairmont works with, a geneticist called Miriam Shephard who is studying the DNA of creatures with her colleague, investigating why daemons are going mad, why vampires are failing to sire, why witches are losing their powers. Daisy doesn't trust Miriam and Miriam doesn't trust Daisy, but when a friend of hers is murdered by a vampire with blood rage and she learns that she can't even trust her own mother, there's really nowhere else for Daisy Mercer to turn but Miriam Shephard.
