"I heard a story..."

Arachne Allitt's life was over from the moment she was born.

Not literally, of course. But the purpose of her conception was to give her sister her bone marrow. Her sister, Athena, had contracted cancer when she was two. Her last chance was her sister.

And it worked.

The only problem was after Arachne saved her sister's life her parents hadn't any reason to pay attention to her. They lavished all of their love and attention on Athena, for fear they might lose her again. The only person who seemed to remember Arachne had saved her sister's life, was her sister.

So Athena was always kind to Arachne, sharing her toys, and playing with her younger sister. But as Arachne grew older she started to realize that her parents paid more attention to her sister. And she grew more and more bitter. And when bad feelings gather and gather, they're bound to explode one day. And explode they did.

"About an unloved little girl."

It was Arachne's seventh birthday, and she wasn't expecting much. Not much at all. Up to that point, her sister had always gotten her a present, presenting it with a smile on her face. Her parents congratulated her with a mumbled, "happy birthday sweetie."

So when she woke up and walked into the kitchen, her black hair tangled, a congratulation was what she expected.

What she was met with, was silence. Or rather, the sound of her Father silently flipping through the newspaper, and her Mother sipping her coffee. They hadn't noticed her, but there was still hope. "Hello!" She declared, rather loudly, and her Father glanced up, looked her in the eyes, and said nothing.

"Where's Athena?"

At the mention of her sister's name, both of her parents looked up. "Hmm? Oh, your sister went to school early. She's the captain of the soccer team," her Mother declared proudly, as one might brag to another parent.

And that was that.

Arachne climbed to a cupboard, being too short to reach it normally. As she strained to reach the box, she felt a little tingling in her fingers. A quick glance revealed a tiny black spider, perched on her fingers and blinking its eight eyes on her innocently. "Argh!" She shrieked and fell backwards cereal flying everywhere.

Her parents paid attention then.

"Arachne!" She was almost surprised they remembered her name. "That was a foolish thing to do, climbing on the counters like that!" Her father yelled.

"I-I'm, sorry, I was just-" Her lower lip trembled.

Her father sighed. "I'm sorry for yelling. But you'll have to clean this mess up before school."
Arachne looked down pitifully, surprised to see the spider. "It's not your fault." She whispered, softly letting the spider crawl onto her hand. "It must get pretty tiring, everyone hating you without a reason. Well, I don't hate you." She leaned close to the spider's face, smiling warmly. She could almost swear that the spider smiled back.
