Prologue

“We don’t have much time.” I greeted his words with a shuddering gasp. His hands brushed over my shoulders, and traveled down to my waist. He pulled me closer and laid his face into the crook of my neck, breathing just as heavily, if not more.

Another round of gunshots fired off in the street over and I flinched, moving even closer to the wall.

“Listen, Harry-” I pulled away, so that he had to look at me. His expression was serious, almost calm- but his eyes were frantic, dark and wide. I let my hand cradle his cheek, my thumb swiping back and forth. tears brimmed in my eyes, but I didn’t let them fall.

“Harry, sooner or later, he’s going to get me.” He shook his head, but I ignored him. The gunshots moved even closer- They would turn down our alley street any minute now, I was sure.

At the look on my face, Harry shoved his head back down into the hollow of my neck, His lips pressed gently to my collarbone. I stroked the top of his head softly, pushing down the sweat-soaked curls.

“I want you to know that I-“ Once more his head shot up, this time to glare at me.

“Don’t say it, because you think we’ll never see each other again.” He pressed his lips together for a split second before parting them again.

“Nothing will keep us apart.” I tried not to let my bravado fade, instead rolling my eyes slightly and pushing at his shoulder, just enough to make him sway in place.

“Remember when you said you would never be the romantic one?” I saw, just to the right of his ear, people turning into the alleyway. I pulled harry with me, behind a rusty dumpster, before he could notice the commotion. Gunshots fired around us, some bouncing off of the blue metal with sharp snaps.

I let myself fold into him, his heart hammering against my ear. His arms had swung around me as we had moved to a crouch, and now they were clenched, as if strength alone would protect me from bullets.

I knew better, but didn’t have the heart to make him believe otherwise. I just let him hold me, until the footsteps were right beside us.

“They didn’t even try to run.” His voice was familiar, in the way that it grated against my ear. Harry pulled me up and I felt him want to push me behind him, but at the sight of the five guys in front of us, he seemed to pause.

I knew he would ask me to run, but it was too late- We both understood that, now. I moved towards harry and kissed him until two of them were pulling me away. The other three stayed to hold him back- It took three, because he was fighting back so terribly. I felt the tears finally fall, and through them, I watched his blurry figure grow farther and farther away.

I love you.
