"January the 20th. Today, you were supposed to turn 25."
Clink. The small glass frame landed on the table, holding a picture of Hea happily smiling with her brand new guitar. Around the picture were small candles, along with little trinkets that belonged to her once upon a time.
They were nearly identical. From the color of their hair, to their height, to their style of clothes. Even their eyes were the same. Large orbs adorned with monolids with a dark, deep shade of brown.
"Things haven't been the same since you left. It's too quiet. I miss the sound of your voice, and auntie has aged a lot since you passed, you know?"
Just like the last 8 times, nothing but a silence followed.
A knot formed in Areum's throat. "A-and, of all the things I could've done, I managed to lose someone else. How can I fix this?"
Silence once again.
That was right. She was completely on her own now, but it was only natural.
She collected the mound of notebooks on her desk, reading over the lyrics that she had so carefully crafted herself, on the quietest of nights, with the most intense emotions running through her.
Love. That word was constantly highlighted by her eyes on the smudged pages.
What did that word even mean?
Confusion was the only feeling of hers that she could correctly identify.
What kind of person helped their friend clean tables with their very expensive handkerchief?
What kind of person stayed up for their friend all night, waiting for them to wake up despite having no fault in the matter?
What kind of person spends hundreds of dollars on clothes for their friend just because they mentioned their last set of clean clothes?
A special person, that was for sure.
Because in all previous times, dedication of that sorts was never present.
Smelling the salty, sour smell of the ocean, 8 year old Areum waited for her friends, the birthday cake sitting solemnly behind her.
"Honey, I don't think they'll come. How about we start having cake now?" her mother suggested.
"No, I think they may have gotten lost. O-or maybe they can't come because we're on an island. Some people are scared of the ocean and-"
"Areum," Hea began. "If they don't want to come, that's their loss! Cause we're gonna have the most awesome, incredible, funnest birthday party for you ever!"
With glossy eyes, Areum turned to her. "Really?"
Hea nodded. She picked up Areum and placed her on her shoulders.
"Is it ok if I take her to an arcade later today, Auntie? She'll be back before bedtime, promise!"
Her mother sighed. "Alright, but only after we open up birthday presents. Let's wait for your uncle and for Hea's friends to come, alright?"
That was one of the last birthday parties she had.
After several moments of hesitance, Areum picked up her phone.
Hey, Irene, I'm sorry about the way I acted towards you yesterday. I've been feeling overwhelmed, but it wasn't your fault at all. You didn't deserve to get yelled at.
She sent the text. A little message below it showed that Irene read it, but after some minutes, she didn't respond.
If you want to, we can talk about this over the phone. Although, I'm kind of sick right now, stomach cramps and all that, so I apologize for my sick sounding voice.
