A feint scream pierced the chill desert air. Another girl had failed the trials. Gwen silently ran through the night, anxiously checking her watch. As she ran swiftly, the little particles of red dust flicked up behind her and dotted her thighs. She winced as the old wooden door of the makeshift 'house' creaked open. The girl pushed the door shut and bolted all the 6 locks shut. She sighed with relief and closed her eyes, waiting.

The clink of machinery came closer, and as it did, Gwen squeezed her eyes tighter and pushed her aching back against the old door. "Please," she whispered, "not me." The machine creeped closer and closer to the building. Clink, slide, slide, clink, slide, slide. "Please," she whispered. The machine stopped for a brief moment. Gwen held her breath and bit her tongue so she wouldn't cry. The machine then suddenly started back up again and she heard the 'clinks' fade away. The girl let out a long sigh and opened up her her glowing green eyes, but she knew she wouldn't be safe for long. She slid down the frame of the door and sat down with her legs crossed. Just as she thought it was over, a terrifying wail filled the silence. Gwen pressed her sweaty hands to her ears. Feint sobs filled the air. Another girl has been taken to the trials. Gwen felt herself relax but deep down, she felt pity for the girl who was taken. Maybe it was Zara, she thought, but she pushed the idea out of her mind.

She slowly walked away from the door and brushed the cold sand off her dry legs. Her legs were sore from running and her throat was parched. If you had've ran three more kilometres, you could've had water, a little voice in her mind said, maybe you could get some now, the Taker in this area is gone! But she couldn't get water, not now anyway. It was after curfew, so some Takers would still be lurking. She then noticed how late it was. She peered at her cracked watch screen and saw that it was close to 1am. Gwen pulled two large rugs off a roughly places wooden shelf. She placed the larger one on the sandy floor, which she sat on top of, and then pulled the other blanket up to her neck and laid down. Her eyes slowly closed and she fell asleep.
