Chapter 1
Hope laid her head against the window shield, asking herself why she put her headphones in her suitcase. Her two twin brothers seemed to have an endless supply of energy; rambling on about what adventures they would have at the beach this year and asking unlimited amounts of questions. She rolled her eyes and tried to concentrate on the surroundings, already picturing things that she could paint. All of a sudden the road had become bumpy. Her body jerked back and forth. Trevor and Jason took advantage of the moment and decided to play a game of who could push the other harder. Normally this would have annoyed Hope, but her spirits were lifted. The sound of the gravel road was a sign that they were near the beach house.
As they pulled up to the familiar curve Hope took in the sight that was before her. The sky was clear and she could already hear the waves crashing like a metronome. As they came to a full stop the boys jumped out and started to run towards the beach. "Boys, be careful!" Her mom yelled out. Hope smiled and got out of the car making her way up the steps that led up to her room. She opened the door and took in the sight. Her room was exactly the way she had left it, with the exception of the dust that took home on her drawers. The pink covers were neatly made. Her jewelry box was still by the mirror holding her charm bracelet that she had forgotten the summer before. She looked out of the big window that had the full view of the beach. She stuck her head out of the window and allowed the wind to tickle her skin and flow through her hair. She closed her eyes and smiled. Smelling the saltiness from the water she knew it was going to be a good summer.
She walked to her bed and plopped herself down. She turned her head to the side and noticed the picture that was sitting on her drawer. It was the summer of 7th grade. The last time she had seen Liam.
Liam's parents had known her parents from way back in the day when they attended the same high school. They were good friends, almost like family. Every summer the two families would go to the beach houses together. Liam was a stubborn boy. She remembered him as the boy with the short brown hair and the gapped smile that she always made fun of. She was never fond of him, mostly because he was always mean to her; either pulling her pigtails or calling her names. He pushed her around as if she were his personal slave. Long story short, they didn't really like each other. She never really thought about him unless they were at the beach house. She wondered how he was doing and if his family was doing alright.
"Hope!" She heard her mother call out. She quickly ran down the stairs, forgetting about Liam and saw her mom looking out the window."Yea mom?"
"Honey can you please go get the boys for me. I'm scared they're gonna wander off somewhere and get lost."
Hope sighed yet she still went after the boys. She took the back door and immediately took off her shoes and let the warm sand touch her toes. She let out a little giggle. The familiar feeling of the sand lightly scratching her foot brought back so many memories. She looked ahead to see, two smaller figures chasing one another. Hope started to run towards them. Allowing her feet to sink into the sand and surround herself in the sun and ocean.
As she reached the boys she told them to follow her back to the house, and to her surprise they listened.
Going up the steps her mother said, “Hope! Go get your things and unpack. I want to start cooking dinner soon and I need your help!"
She ran outside to the car and popped the hood. She grabbed ahold of her bag and started to tug at it, but it wouldn't budge. She used both hands to get a grip on it and pulled as hard as she could. She stumbled back as the bag came flying out, and landed straight on her butt. She winced when she felt the tiny rocks jab into her sensitive skin. She got up and started to smooth out her shorts, when she heard the sound of car tires coming up the road. She paused and looked down the road.
She took ahold of her bag and started to walk to the house. She made it to the door when she heard the car door slam shut. She turned around to see a boy. That looked around her age, maybe a year or two older. He had an athletic build. His arms flexed as he picked up a bag that fell revealing muscles she already knew he would have. His dark brown hair dipped into his eyes. His jaw was angular and his lips shaped like a heart.
The first thing she noticed about him was how tall he actually was; Probably around 6'2. He was wearing simple mint khaki shorts with a plain white V-neck. She didn't realize she was staring at him until he looked up at her. Their eyes met for a second. She felt herself blush. Heat took over her body. She couldn't tell what color his eyes were, but she could see that they were stormy and filled with an excited energy.
She was going to go inside when it hit her. Her eyes got big and she turned back around. He was still looking her way his face filled with curiosity and amazement. His lips formed into a side grin. His gorgeous face, made her heart skip a beat. She waved to him and shyly smiled.
She opened the door and went up to her room. Locking it quickly behind her she put her back against the door and slid to the ground. She hadn't noticed that she had been holding her breath. She put her head in her hands and shook it. Why did she wave? Was she stupid? She hadn't seen him in years. His Wavy Dark brown hair was perfect. His smile was gapless. His body was the definition of fit. She still couldn't believe it. After four years, he finally decided to come back. The boy she just saw, the boy that made her heart race, the boy that she couldn't stop thinking about, was Liam Smith.
