Chapter Two
"Why doesn’t anyone know about me?" I asked quietly. Tears blurring my visions. I looked down. No one knew about my existence. My ears were ringing.
"I’m sorry, I cannot tell you."
"What do you mean you can’t tell me?"
"I just can’t. I’ve said to much already."
"Does Grayson know?" I asked.
Grandfather nodded his head. "Yes, he knows."
Without a word I turned my back and walked shakily up the stairs to my room. I laid numbly on my bed. I don’t know how long I laid there, tears silently falling down my face. There was a knock on my door and Scarlett came in and sat down in a chair.
"Don’t feel bad Katherine. He loves you. He is doing the best he can. He didn’t want to lose you when you were born so he kept you and hid you. It was for the best."
I rolled away from Scarlett and stared at the wall.
Sighing she went to my drawer and started taking out the dresses.
"What are you doing?" I asked watching her.
"Your grandfather wants to take a trip to a very special place with you. He hopes it will gain your trust back. You’ll be leaving tonight."
Not caring I closed my eyes and drifted to sleep until a shaking woke me up. Scarlet stood dragging me up and dressing me. It went by super fast and I was drowsy. The next thing I knew I standing in front of the carriage.
"Where is grandfather?" I asked panicking as Scarlett pushed me into the carriage.
" I’m sorry Katherine. We are doing this for your own protection." She shoved me in and closed the door. Running to it I tried to open it, but it was locked. The carriage jerked forward. "No! Let me go!" Tears streamed down my face. I had no idea where I was going. What would happen to me? I suddenly felt very drowsy. My eyelids drifted closed and I fell sound asleep.
I woke up in a groggy state. My neck ached and so did my legs. Sitting up I rubbed my eyes. Where was I? Looking around I saw I was in a carriage and screamed. A man was sitting in the corner.
"Shhh!" He said covering my mouth with his hand. I squirmed out from his grasp.
"Who are you?" I demanded.
"Grayson." The man said. His voice low. I calmed down.
"Where is my grandfather?"
"He…" Grayson paused. "He went off in a different carriage to distract the Hunters from you."
"Who are the Hunters?"
"They, they are a human society that hunt our kind."
"What is Our kind exactly?" I asked skeptical.
"We are Guardians. Fallen ones actually."
"What?"
Grayson sighed. "You don’t know anything about our kind do you?"
I started at him silent. "A long time ago when humans were placed on this earth, Guardians were placed to protect them from evil forces. Never seen, but always there. Over the years, the Guardians saw that the humans were adjusted well without them and started shirking their duties. When God confronted them, they grew frustrated, showing him, the humans didn’t need their help anymore. They’d developed weapons, found food, and made a shelter. God was furious at them threatening to take away their powers and cast them aside as humans. The Guardians revolted. In return, he ripped away their right to travel to heaven and back, banishing them to earth. They fled to earth too fast for their powers to be taken away. After years on earth, they realized that they were slowly and were no longer immortal and would die. They were furious God had threw them for such a loop but realized that they deserved it.
To keep their kind alive, they started mating. The children looked like any other human child and blended in exceptionally well. The longer the Guardians were on earth, the more they had to hid their abilities. About one hundred years ago, certain humans started noticing that the fallen Guardians weren’t exactly human. When the Guardians began being killed, they went into hiding and found out the group hunting them was a special secret human society called the Hunters. Lately, the Hunters have become better at finding out who we are and tracking us down . Last night, your Grandfather received word that the Hunters were coming for you and him. In a desperate attempt to save you, he snuck you out the back into a black carriage, while he ran out into one in the front. The Hunters only saw him."
"So you mean that, that they captured him and…k-killed him?" I choked out the last word.
Grayson looked away. "I’m afraid so. I’m so sorry Katherine."
My throat tightened. I tried not to let the tears flow, but I burst out crying. Thick hot tears rolling down my cheeks. I hadn’t even gotten to say goodbye. He had only been looking out for me all these years. Grayson pulled me into his lap and hugged me tight, comforting me. "It’s alright Katherine. Everything will be okay." He said in a comforting voice.
I shook my head. "He was the only family I had." That made me cry even harder.
"Shh, it’s going to be alright." Grayson said cradling me. A man I barely knew.
Shaking my head I pulled away and distanced myself. Just twelve hours before, I had been seated at dinner with grandfather. In two days my world had been turned upside down and everything I believe in wasn’t true. The carriage suddenly pitched forward. Grayson and I were thrown back and forth in the carriage. Screaming I felt my head hit a hard surface and my world went black.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m cold and covered in something sticky and keep being jostled. Opening my eyes the world is spinning. I catch a glimpse of Grayson’s jaw. What’s going on? His breath is white in the cold, dark night.
"Katherine, get up now." He commands. "They’ve found us." I look around and see Grayson pulling me out of the carriage. We’re at the bottom of a ravine. My eyes widen and my stomach churns when catch a glance of the dead driver and horses. Grayson doesn’t give me a chance to see them again and drags me down the ravine. My shoes slipping on rocks. I hear shouts behind me.
"Don’t look." Grayson says in front of me, but my numb body can’t keep up with his and my ankle slips on a rock and I fall down. Pain explodes through my face. I choke back my scream. Grayson doesn’t waste any time and scoops me up. My body is clenched up from the pain. I don’t want to move. He maneuvers through the black forest without a thought. Stopping he moves a rock and the ground opens up. Placing the rock back he runs into the secret passage way and closes it. He isn’t even breathing hard. Staying silent he looks through a crack in the hidden doorway. I am able to see as well.
"Where’d did they go?" A cold voice roared. I would have shivered if it wouldn’t have cause me even more pain. Torch lights stopped by a tree. Men stood in a circle. "Dammit! They got away." The cold voice roared again.
"We’ll get them next time." Another voice said.
"We better." The cold voice said turning to a man. In less than a second he’d shot him down. "If we wouldn’t have been fooled by that old man we would have had her." The Hunters turned and left the man for the animals.
I felt a cold chill come over me, as I had just witnessed a killing
Grayson turned and followed the secret tunnel.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
The pain was consuming me. "No…" I whispered. The blackness closed in as I felt Grayson’s pace increase.
