"I hate to have to say this, but you're fired."

I sighed, leaving the building I once called my place of work. About half a block later on the way to my car, one of the boxes holding a few things that were kinda sitting on my desk for decoration broke. "Shit!" I mumbled and looked around, not seeing anyone, and placed down the other boxes, placing the fallen objects on top of a less-full box.

Struggling to balance the boxes on the way there, I finally got to my car. "Let's be smart about this." I mumbled to myself again, placing the boxes on the ground and then looking for my keys, which happened to be at the bottom of the last box I looked in. And after putting everything in the car, I was off back to my apartment.

I once again struggled with the boxes just trying to unlock something. But soon, the door was unlocked and boxes were placed down, probably never going to be opened for weeks from now. Sighing, I flopped onto the couch, checking my phone for what time it was. 3:27pm, great, still around 6 and a half hours until I can easily fall asleep.

•Time Skip•

Finally breaking my gaze on the ceiling, I checked back to my phone 2:39am. 'Holy shit that was fast...' I thought to myself as I stood up, still completely awake. Moving my curtain to look out the window I saw a kind of sad looking emptiness. There were no people, the lights were all turned off, except for the few flickering light posts, and there was just silence.

'Maybe I should go for a walk or something, maybe just to clear my head for a bit.' After a few minutes of sitting there contemplating with myself, I threw on a hoodie and grabbed my keys, locking the door on the way out. "Maybe I'll go to that bridge by 6th street..." I mumbled to myself as I made my way down the stairs and exited the building.

Same as when I was looking out the window, everything seemed abandoned, I was all by myself, which in this case felt kinda nice. Finally getting some time to myself, and just to forget about things for a while. Maybe I should do this more often— my thoughts were interrupted by the sound of someone humming, and somehow I had reached the bridge already.

Time must fly when you detach yourself from reality for a while. I slowed down a bit, not wanting to attract too much attention from the figure, who was looking at the water. They noticed I was there and was a bit shocked.

"Not many people come here this late at night, what are you doing here?" 'Very straightforward' I thought to myself as I said, "Just here to clear my head really, what about you?" He sighed "Same goes here I guess..."

Neither of us had turned to face the other. "So anything specific thats been troubling you oh so much to come here recently?" I said, turning to face the person, who was also turning at that point, "Just office work being annoying I guess, there was this whole order mishap and we had to start all over again with this big project— it's just been a stressful week."

That was a lot. "Yeah, office jobs really are the worst, I wouldn't know anymore though, got fired for 'Over-Hiring' or something like that" I put air quotes around 'Over Hiring' as he winced, "Yeah mines not as bad as yours, I feel kinda bad now." Huh nice guy "You shouldn't, it was a shitty company anyways." He nods, "Most companies seem to be shitty if I'm going to be honest..." he added a small laugh at the end

"Yeah, they really do..." I trailed off, smiling at him. I could just barely tell because of the darkness, but a small smile was flashed back at me. "So, what's your name stranger?" He said, leaning forward a bit, with his hands in his pockets. "Oh- right, it's (y/n), boring I know." I said, as Wilbur stopped and smiled. "I find it to be a rather lovely name," I felt a bit of heat rush to my cheeks "The name's William, you can call me Wilbur though."

I laughed, "Man, you had the perfect moment to use the 'but you can call me anytime' line, and you missed it." He laughed along with me, "Oh yeah, it's because every pretty lady I meet on the bridge I give that line to, and I wanted to spice it up today." We laughed for a moment, before I said "You can barely see me, how do you know I'm a pretty lady-" Almost as if on cue, the street lamp above us flickered for moment before illuminating the two of us in yellowy-orange light.

"That was some magic Wattpad shit right there" he said, looking down at me, as he was a good amount taller then me. I laughed, shaking my head as I agreed, "This means we're obviously destined to be together." Wilbur said, smiling once more. "Obviously." I agreed, rolling my eyes lightly.

"So, any other reason then a messed up project causing you to be here?" Wilbur sighed, looking down at the water below the bridge rushing by, I joined him. "That project was supposed to go to the really big corporate guys, which would then go to higher up guys, and just because these people on my team aren't taking it seriously, they're making me fix everything and I get no credit for that! They're making this so, so, much harder then it needs to be." I let him finish as I put a hand on his back, rubbing small circles onto it.

"Hey, at least you should have a little bit of relief know that I know you're the only one doing the work, maybe you should making a small credits for who did the work on it, so maybe you'll get something good out of it?" He sighed leaning a bit closer to me, his eyes still glued to the water.

"Maybe I should but," he looked over to me "those guys on the team won't be too happy about it, they'll want credit for all the work they did." He added a bit of sarcasm at the end, making me laugh, he laughed with me. We stood there for a moment in silence, though it was a calming one.

It stayed like that for a few minutes as the two of us listened to the water and the soft hum coming from the street lamp above us. "This has been nice, thanks." Wilbur said, breaking the silence. "It's nothing, I had a nice time too." I responded, grinning at Wilbur. The light above us started flickering again, before turning off again. "I think that may be a sign that we should part ways." Wilbur said, looking down at me. "I fully agree, I think we should both try and at least get some rest." Wilbur nodded, or at least I think he did, it was hard to see again.

"Well, maybe I'll see you tomorrow, stranger." Wilbur said, turning away from me. "Same goes to you, tall man." He laughed, a genuine laugh that mad my heart flutter a bit. "Goodnight, one last time." I muttered a small goodbye back to him as a wave of tiredness washed over me, and I headed back home.
