A Shape Shifter Story

Prologue

A canopy of a jungle covered the sky above me. I felt an urgency to run. Something was chasing me; I didn’t know what. Should I turn around and look? No! Just keep running.

“Someone, please help!” I yelled at the top of my lungs. I knew someone else besides myself and my pursuer was here. I knew I could trust this person.

I kept pumping my legs, willing myself to keep moving forward. I didn’t know where I was going, but my body did. My heart was beating like a drum. The loud rhythmic pulse was thrumming in my ear.

I could hear the cry of a wild cat somewhere nearby. Why did my body instinctively turn towards it? Why do I feel relieved? Shouldn’t I be running in the opposite direction?

My speed started to decrease. The shaking, tired limbs holding me up were about to give out.

Just a few feet in front of me a tall figure with striking green eyes and ebony hair stood. He had lean muscles like some lanky cat. He wore no shirt and had a strong torso. From his neck hung a chain that held what looked like a royal crest. His legs were muscular and lean. He wore black pants; his feet were bare, and he had a sword sheathed at his waist. The strings that were on the handle of the sword were a jade green, to match his eyes.

All of a sudden I felt safe, as if nothing bad could happen to me while I was near him. My pursuer let out a maniacal laugh while being concealed by the forest. The man was now standing between me and the menacing laughter. His hand glided smoothly to the hilt of his blade. His face showed no emotion, but I could tell he would die protecting me if he had to.

The edge of my vision was fading around the sides. Everything started to go dark. I opened my eyes. I was laying in my bed. It was only a dream. If it was only a dream then why did it all feel so real? Why was I completely terrified of the being that the laugh came from; and why was I longing to be back next to that mystery man?
