The sound of snowflakes gently hitting the windows filled the room as everyone gathered in the Cullen living room. Even Alistair had joined them, standing by Dorothea as she gazed out the window, lost in thought. The snow drifted softly down, a serene contrast to the tense energy inside. Emmet's voice cut through the silence as he posed a question about the Volturi and the need for witnesses.
"Why does he need witnesses?" Emmett asked, his confusion evident.
"To spread the word that justice has been served. After he slaughters an entire coven," Alistair replied with a dark tone, casting a brief glance toward Dorothea. She could feel the weight of his gaze and noticed the way his lips twisted into a faint, almost apologetic smile. It wasn't truly sincere, but it was the best he could offer. Dorothea couldn't help but glow a little at his attempt to create a scene, though the corner of his eyes never strayed from the subject at hand.
"Benjamin, Tia, we're leaving," Amun said abruptly as if he were preparing for the inevitable. It was a quick and expected decision, one that Dorothea had already anticipated.
"And where will you go?" Edward's voice rang out, a calm, steady force. "What makes you think they'll be satisfied with Alice, Jasper, and Thea? What's to stop them from going after Benjamin next? Or Zafrina or Kate or anyone else with a gift? Anyone they want. Their goal isn't punishment, it's power. It's acquisition."
Dorothea couldn't help but feel a swell of pride for Edward at that moment. Her brother, who had once been the most cautious of them all, had grown into someone who could see the greater picture, and the maturity in his voice left her silently cheering for him.
"Carlisle might not ask you to fight, but I will. For the sake of my family. But also for yours. And for the way you want to live." The words were powerful, as if Edward had taken everything into account and decided that standing by their side was the only option. Dorothea couldn't resist the urge to mentally cheer him on, even though she knew he could probably hear her thoughts.
The silence in the room was heavy, and then Jacob stood up, breaking the quiet. "The packs will fight. We've never been afraid of vampires!"
His words ignited a fire, and the Delani coven was next, standing one by one, all pledging to join the fight. Tanya's voice rang out, firm and unwavering, "We will fight."
One by one, members of powerful covens stood in solidarity, each adding their word to the growing commitment to stand together against the Volturi. Vladimir chuckled, his dark humor evident. "That didn't take much."
