How It All Started
The first day of kindergarten is always hard for the kids. It's a relief for the parents! But, most of the time, is something very difficult for children to grasp. That's not how it was for Sladder. I would know since I'm (now) his best friend.
Sladder (or as I call him, Slade) seemed to be a very shy, 5 year old. That's not actually the case though. He can actually be as loud and proud as he wants to be. Except that's the point. He DOESN'T want to be loud. In fact, he doesn't really want to talk to anyone at all. For a little kid, he is very reclusive. I remember when I met him on the first day of Kindergarten.
Flashback
"Come on, Nikki! You don't want to be late on your very first day. Do you?" questioned Nikki's mother.
"No, Mommy. I don't want to be late. But, Kate told me that she was putting a big braid in her hair today. Can I have two braids?" Asked the wide-eyed kindergartener.
"Ok, but we have to hurry," Nikki's mother told her.
Nikki's mom put up the best two braids she could in her daughters hair and then begged her to get her new, rainbow backpack. Not even realizing what was really happening, the soon-to-be kindergartener got into her mom's gray mini van.
Once they arrived at school is where the drama started. Nikki walked into school hand in hand with her mom. She had the biggest smile on her face that any little girl could have. That smile was soon crushed when they reached her teacher's doorway.
Nikki began walking into the room when suddenly her mother dropped her hand. She turned around and looked at her mother in a confused way.
"Mommy, aren't you coming?" She asked.
"Nikki," her mom said while leading her out of the doorway, "we already talked about this. Mommy can't come to school with you. You've got to go on your own. "
Small tears welled up in Nikki's eyes.
"Please come with me. I'm scared! I don't know anyone but Kate!" Nikki began to say.
"Shhh. I know, Nikki. Look, I'll be back very soon to pick you up." Her mother started to say when a little boy walked right into the classroom without saying goodbye to his mother or anything. "See? He can so it! And so can you!"
Nikki's mom stopped the boy on his way in and asked, "Hi, what is your name?"
The little boy did not answer her. He just continued walking into the classroom. Then his mother turned around and answered her.
"That would be my son, Sladder. Please don't be offended. He is actually a very loving boy. It's just, he does not like to talk to people. Even me for that matter." his mother explained.
"That's quite alright!" Nikki's mom said while turning back to Nikki. "Honey, I have to go now. Be brave! Make new friends!"
Nikki finally let go of her mother and walked into the classroom. There, she was greeted with 12 new students eyes. Not one face was familiar to her. Except for the little girl in the back with ,sure enough, one big braid in her hair. The strange little boy was there too. He was in the back corner. Nobody else was siting around him. But, in order for her to sit by Kate, she was also stuck sitting next to the odd boy.
She made her way over to the chair and smiled at them both.
"Hi Kate! And ummm, hi boy I do not know!" Nikki said with a giggle.
"Hi Nikki! Sit by me!" Kate told her.
That's pretty much how things went for the next two hours of Kindergarten. Kate and Nikki sat in there seats giggling and answering questions their teacher asked. The odd boy sat in silence. Never acknowledging either girl or anyone in the room. Finally, they were aloud to have free play time. Kate and Nikki found a game that they were accustomed to playing at there houses. Restaurant. Nikki claims to want to grow up and work in her very own restaurant.
The two girls went over to the play kitchen and pretending to cook up a large meal. Then, Kate sat at a desk while Nikki served her. The only problem was, they needed more customers. So, Nikki decided to ask the boy, who was now reading a very large book in the corner.
"Excuse me." Nikki said.
The boy, Sladder, sat and ignored her the first two times she said that. Finally, Nikki got all in his face.
"EXCUSE ME!" The boy put the book in his lap and stared at her. "Do you want to play restaurant with me?"
"What I want is to be left alone." Sladder told her quietly.
"But, please? It will be very fun!" Nikki pleaded with him.
"I said NO!" Sladder told her even louder.
"Ok," Nikki pouted with shrugged shoulders. "Can I at least know your name?"
"No! You can't know my name. Don't talk to me," Sladder finally exploded.
The rest of her kindergarten year, Nikki avoided the boy who had yelled at her. She eventually learned his name. But, she desperately wanted to be his friend. The reason must have been because he didn't want any friends. And if Nikki couldn't have something, she ALWAYS wanted it even more.
