"Oh, come now. Really?" The shortest of the three stepped forward first, flicking his silky champagne-colored hair from his eyes. "You should be honored that you get to introduce such a sweet and charming little brother like me!"To say I was a little taken aback by this demon's appearance was an understatement. He was beautiful; his skin gleamed in the light, blemish-free, and the smile he turned my way was so effulgent and warm. The flickering in his eyes seemed to reflect that and I couldn't help my own answering smile, although small.
"This one here is Asmodeus," Lucifer said, as his brother seemed to turn the wattage up on his smile. "He's the fifth eldest. He is also the Avatar of Lust."
My polite smile faltered just a bit as he finished Asmodeus's introduction. Lust? I mean - giving him another (discreet) onceover - the notion didn't appear too far-fetched. There was something about him that felt like it was drawing me in, however I personally wouldn't call it "lust." But, honestly, the energy about him was a nice reprieve from the two powerful presences I first encountered.
"Wh... I can't believe you just totally ignored what I said! And not only that, you referred to me as 'this one.' How rude!"
Asmodeus, his feminine features stretched in irritation, glared up at his older brother. But before Lucifer could answer, another one of the demons entered the conversation. "Hmph. At least he didn't ignore you altogether. How do you think I feel?"
Now my eyes focused on the next brother, his golden locks shimmering brighter than almost anything else in the room. How did I not notice him before? His eyebrows were slanted over his eyes and what looked like hurt crossed his face, but something in my gut told me it was only an act.
The thought that he resembled his dark-haired brother flitted through my mind.
"That one there is Satan, the fourth eldest of us," Lucifer explained, ignoring the blonde's expression. "At first glance, he may seem like a responsible demon with a good head on his shoulders, but looks can be deceiving."
His name being Satan, I wasn't surprised by his words. What did make me worry was that it was coming from a demon named "Lucifer." If someone like him thought that of his own brother... I winced internally.
"Aha, so I'm that one, am I?" Irritation flashed through his eyes, but it was gone just as suddenly. Satan raised a hand to his chin, the fingers long and graceful; I could feel his gaze on me, intent and assessing. The sensation that provoked was as if he was delving beneath my skin, trying to read me like I was the pages of a book. Immediately, I clamped down on anything that could give away what I was thinking. My polite smile remained, though, as an afterthought.
That interaction lasted all of two seconds and ended with the blonde giving me a small, catlike smile in return. I don't what he deduced of me from it, but that itchy feeling dissipated. "Nice to meet you, Alyssa." Satan held out the hand that hadn't been stroking his chin, the green on his nails gleaming. "I am Satan, the Avatar of Wrath."
My heart lurched. That was why Lucifer had said "looks can be deceiving." Although I had only noticed mild irritation in him thus far, from what I was deducing - I should be lucky that that was all.
Resolute, and never letting my smile falter with this one, I took his hand. I didn't want to come across as rude, so I carefully lifted my eyes to his, briefly - and was instantly struck by how much his irises reminded me of a warm summer day. That line from that poem by Robert Frost drifted through my head as we parted: "Nature's first green is gold." I only thought that due to the flecks the same color as his hair surrounded by warm, emerald green, but...there was something else about him that triggered it...
