I stood outside the building, my backpack strung over my shoulder with contents I needed, scared about what would happen if I walked in. My friend Alina had convinced me to show up to her dance practice just before her recital, and as her best friend I agreed. She had warned me she was going to have three other people there with her, didn't say by names, just their labels to her: Fellow Chaos Causer, Book-Nerd Best Friend, and Dance Studio Girl. The last named sounded like she hadn't exactly invited the girl since it seemed like she went to the dance studio. Defeatingly I walked into the building and was automatically greeted with squeals from Alina.
"Carlina! You made it!" She was jumping up and down in her glittery outfit that I was sure she was going to wear the next day. "Of course Alina! What type of friend would I be if I didn't make it to my best friend's dance recital?"
I joked and walked over to her, then seeing three figures behind her. A boy with dirty blonde hair, bright brown eyes, and was rather small for what I believed was mine and Alina's age, another boy with dark brown hair and crystal blue eyes, that reminded me a lot of my own, and a girl with bright orange hair with bright green eyes that looked me up and down. Did I have something on my shirt? I didn't believe so. "OH! This is Caiden, Aiden, and Amelia."
She said motioning to all of them in turn. "Guys, this is Carlina." Alina looked over at me and gasped dramatically. "Move the hair out of your face!" She said, moving the hair away from my eyes, and those moments seemed to stop and slow down.
I had confusing feelings for Alina, I had been labeled as a bisexual for a few years before, yet it felt like Alina was trying to confuse me more about my feelings, when we had sleepovers she would insist I slept on the bed with her, just on different sides, would change her shirt in front of me constantly, and so forth. My other absolute best friend who was also friends with Alina, who's name was Addy, always thought that Alina was just testing me. He told me to take the time slow and process how I feel around people. "Nice to meet you Carlina." Aiden said holding out his hand with a smile.
What did he expect me to do? Shake his hand? I would have, if I wasn't distracted by his smile, he looked so charming, I couldn't take it. I finally took his hand and shook it, his hands were so soft, it felt like he used moisturizer DAILY. Alina and Caiden looked at each other and- smiled?
I think they did. Amelia didn't really look like she liked me though, she kept eyeing my face, hair, outfit, felt like she was staring into my soul. I had enough of her vibe and decided to confront her about it. "Can I help you?" I asked, looking at her with an eyebrow raised.
"No, no, I just REALLY like your shirt." Her voice was squeaky and it sounded as if she overdid the 'really' part of the sentence. "Thank you." I said, but still suspicious of her. We then all sat on the side, except Amelia and Alina who started to practice their dance routine. About a quarter of the way through, Caiden moved to his spot next to Aiden and settled himself on the other side of me, leaving me stuck in between him and Aiden. What were Alina and him planning?
I guess I was going to find out. . .
