“Olivia! Olivia, darling, come back!” his deep voice boomed.
Not paying heed to him, I continued to run without a thought of looking back.
I couldn’t believe it. Had I not witnessed it with my own eyes, I would have denied that he could hurt me in such a way. After all, he had promised to marry me. He had talked of our future together and how happy we would be.
Now those thoughts repulsed me.
I could never have a future with a man like Nathaniel Thomas. Not after I caught him in an intimate embrace with that red head.
Amelia was her name. She was quite popular among the men of our town, and very much hated by their spouses. She was notorious for going after the rather well of gentleman without a care as to if they were married with families. Some believed that she actually enjoyed inflicting pain on other people’s happiness, and at the moment I couldn’t agree more.
She knew that Nathaniel and I were betrothed. She knew that he was to be my husband before the years end, and yet she still pursued him.
Though not all the blame could be placed solely on her. No. He had to be willing to follow her to bed, after all it does take two.
With a shake of my head, I dismissed the thoughts of my unfaithful betrothed and his mistress and ran into the awaiting arms of my older brother.
“Olivia, what is wrong? What has happened? Are you okay?” my brother asked with worry clearly written on his masculine face.
“Oh, Alexander! Nathaniel….. He……. With Amelia……,” I croaked out as I buried my head in his chest.
After a second of processing my broken sentence, I felt my brother’s chest rumble.
“He did what?” Alexander growled.
I sniffed and nodded in affirmation as I looked into his fury filled eyes.
“I’m going to kill him!” he seethed in pure anger.
“Alexander, no!” I begged as I hugged him tight.
“I refuse to let that…. That rake’s stupidity to go unpunished, Olivia!”
I shuttered at his cruel words and buried my face deeper in his chest.
Before another word was uttered between us, there was a loud knocking on our house’s front door.
“Olivia! Olivia, darling, open the door!” Nathaniel’s voice pleaded.
Alexander growled once again, and escaped my embrace.
“Just ignore him, Alexander. For my sake, please,” I begged as he stormed over to the door.
Without even a glance back to me, Alexander snatched open the door to revel an out of breath Nathaniel.
“Alexander! Where is Olivia? I must speak with her,” Nathaniel prompted as he tried to get around him.
Alexander blocked the door completely so he could not enter and gave him a death glare.
“You will not be speaking with her ever again. And you will never be seeing her again, either you rake!”
Nathaniel gasped loud enough for me to hear and begged, “You must let me speak with her! She is going to be my wife.”
My brother let out a humorless laugh and shook his head.
“You will not be speaking to her ever again if I have anything to do with it, much less make her your wife.”
“We are betrothed!” Nathaniel argued.
