*Aaliyah's POV*

"DR. SCOTT PLEASE COME TO ER 1. DR. SCOTT TO ER 1 PLEASE!" echoed the halls of the hospital. I rolled my eyes as far back as I possibly could. Never really understood why my hospital obsesses so much over the intercom. They could simply page me through my pager but no, they simply have to be extra and let the whole hospital know if someone is needed somewhere.

Anyways, my name is Aaliyah Scott and I am the #1 Neurologist in the world. Not to brag or anything, but people from all over the world come to me for medical advice and services. It is weird because I never really imagined myself becoming a doctor let alone a world-class surgeon. I grew up in a broken home with little to no childhood.

I took a deep breath and blew a kiss up to the sky as I entered the ER. That is something I always do before walking into a room where I am saving a life.

The emergency room is full like always, not surprising considering New York General Hospital is among the best hospitals in the world. I sighed as I saw Ronny again laying in one of the beds in the corner of the room. Ronny is a little boy who was born with several brain and heart disorders. He has been my patient for as long as I can remember. It hurt my heart to see him at the hospital every 4-5 days.

As I walked to his bed, he grinned at me with his two front missing teeth. "Dr. Scott! Look! I lost... another tooth! The tooth fairy... left me... $80 this time!"  He muttered weakly while trying to sound as enthusiastic as possible. I opened my mouth as wide as possible while examining him. "You are so lucky, Ronny!!" I replied. I was not lying even a bit. I never got more than $2. My parents thought tooth fairies were stupid. However occasionally when they were in a good mood, they would leave $1 or two under my pillow.

I exhaled once I discovered that there were no major issues with his brain. He was brought to the ER because of a seizure. Thankfully, that is all it was. I gave Ronny a smile as I walked over to his parents to give them the good news.

I know that as professionals we are not supposed to be getting personally involved with patients. But Ronny was different. He is a fighter. I have seen him go through things, that even I would not have been able to go through, with a smile on his face. He never fails to amaze me. He is an optimist, clearly.

I looked at my watch and thanked god in my head. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my job. There is no other job in the world that I would prefer over my job. But the 20-hour shifts drive me crazy at times. My legs felt numb as I walked to the attendings' lounge. I quickly changed and tried to get out of there before running into anyone because I simply had zero energy for small talk.

I pulled my hood on over my head as I walked over to my 2020 Mercedes AMG. It was pouring heavily and I did not want my hair wet. I turned the radio on and immediately turned it off after I heard who the singer was. Hearing his voice still hurt even though it has been 9 whole years. I may be a world-class surgeon but I still have my problems. One of my biggest ones? Being in love with my high school ex-boyfriend.
