Everything around me was chaotic. Not in the deep meaningful sense, but literally a mess around me. Suitcases were thrown open, dresses strewn across the room left and right, all while Mama and her housekeeper paced my floors.
"This won't work Maria," Mama exclaimed, throwing the dress Maria had just handed her to the ground. I rolled my eyes. She truly was the most dramatic woman I had ever encountered. Of course, this did not go unnoticed.
"Don't you dare roll your eyes at me Serafina."
I rolled my eyes at Mama again and Maria stifled a giggle.
"Mama, at this rate none of these dresses will be good enough for you."
"This is a very important dinner party amore; you girls need to look your absolute best."
I narrowed my eyes at her, "We've had many dinners like this one before, why is this one so special?"
Mama shot me a look and avoided my question.
My sister stirred in her sleep beside me and I decided to let it go for now. She had fallen asleep on my bed amongst the chaos half an hour ago. If anyone could fall asleep during one of Mama's episodes, it would be her. She yawned loudly stretching her arms above her head. At 21 years old Elia stood at 5'1. She was as petite as they come and she had a certain pixie look about her that I had always envied. My sister was usually the target of the male gaze whenever we had the chance to step out. Of course, no one dared approach her with the beefy men who were constantly guarding us. She took after Mama. I on the other hand was quite the opposite. At 24 and 5'5 I had too much hip, too much going on in the chest department, and an ass that pretty much grew overnight. I had more cushion on me than I liked, constantly teetering between curvy and chubby. To me, it was all the same but Mama loved to remind me that I had the child-bearing hips that every woman dreamed off and the curves of every man's fantasy. I wasn't so sure.
"She's still going at it?"
I looked down at Elia and sighed, nodding.
"Oh good," Mama cried finally noticing Elia's presence.
"You're finally up!"
My sister groaned next to me.
"No groaning, time for you to get ready, go with Maria!"
Elia followed Maria out of the room without a fight.
"You," Mama said turning back to me when they were gone, with a sly look on her face. "Flavia will be helping you, I think I might have the perfect dress for you."
I sighed dramatically. Mama shook her head at me, muttering something under her breath as she exited the room. Flavia entered a couple of minutes later with a garment bag in hand, grinning at me like she knew something I didn't.
In the 21st century, I was aware of how uncommon it was to have maids who were at our beck and call 24/7. Our maids lived in our home, where Papa, oh so kindly, built them a small addition behind our house. Small in comparison to ours but it had 5 bedrooms, all accommodating our five maids.
I was the closest to Flavia, with her being exactly my age. Her Mama, Maria, has been working with my family for years so Flavia and I grew up together.
My father was a high-profile Don of one of the largest organized crime rings in the United States. My family was the mafia, as much as I hated that word. All the men in my family were involved and they had the entire US government in their pockets. My brother, Luca, who was only 2 years older than I was had been involved since the day he turned 16. Papa never forced him, but given the lifestyle we lived, it was inevitable. We had money, lots of it, but it was all tainted by the bloodshed at the hands of the men in my family. The Made men. There was only one other family in the country that compared to us, the Darios. The Dario's family was Italian just like mine but that was about the only similarity we shared. They ran a little differently compared to my own. I had heard stories of how Fernando Dario's eldest son had taken over, becoming a capo dei capi overnight. In other words, he was pretty much the Don of all Dons in most of the states. He was known for his lack of mercy and cold-blooded crime tactics. Definitely not a man who looked like he'd be settling down anytime soon, or ever for that matter. I had never actually seen or met him but he was not a man I ever wanted to cross. Today's dinner was for them. I had heard papa express his fear that the Dario family would come for us next if we didn't conjure up a deal with them that would force an alliance. It was a frenemy relationship between both our families. There was a constant battle for power. Last I heard, the Dario Don had killed one of Luca's men and he was out for blood. This is also why Papa invited the family over for a dinner party. There would be other families in attendance of course but this was for them and everybody knew it. I had never seen Papa back off from a fight before and it was strange that he had let this go so easily but I knew it was because he was afraid of the power they held.
