“Are you sure you can do this?” Sophia asks me in a hushed tone even though it’s just the two of us in my living room.

I smile down as I wrap another plate in old newspaper, “I don’t see much of another option, Soph, he’ll end up killing me if I stay.”

“I definitely don’t want you to stay but this doesn’t seem like the wisest choice to make. I say this out of love and concern, Taz. I want you to be okay.”

I smile fondly at her, setting the wrapped plate into a box. If you would have asked me where I’d be right now, I wouldn’t have told you this. 19, in an abusive marriage, fleeing in the middle of my husband’s work day. I sent the applications off while he was working, and thankfully heard back a month ago. I’ve kept this secret from everyone- my sister, my parents, and of course, my husband. It may sound dramatic, but I’ve been offered a chance to jump ship. Start fresh. Build the life I’ve always wanted to live, not what everyone else wants me to live. A full ride to the school of my dreams, New York University, for business. It was Sophia who encouraged me to apply, seeing her so happy in her first year there was more than enough motive to do it. We both had our sights set on this college, planning it all out during our senior year of high school. But when the time came around, I decided the better route for me would be marriage to my high school sweetheart. Of course, that proved to not be the right choice after a month of marriage. So here I stand, looking out over my apartment that I built with my once-loving husband, wishing it farewell.

“Sophia, just imagine us in New York City, where we can be whoever we want and no one will know the difference. It’s going to be awesome.”

“I guess I am pretty excited to have you at my college, just expect me to crash in your lavishly included apartment more than my own dorm.”

I laugh as I fold the flaps closed on the box. “I hope so. That six hundred and fifty square feet will feel a little too empty without you in it.”

And on that note we continue to quietly pack up before my soon to be ex-husband gets home from work to find his world turned upside down.
