POV: Harper
"I'm going to try and go home, but if the roads are blocked is it okay for me to come back?" Lauren asked my Nan as she repacked her bag. The power was back on, so she took that as her cue to head out for some reason. I didn't want her to go.
"Absolutely. You're welcome here anytime." My Nan hugged Lauren before going back to annoy my Gramps. She did make her stay for breakfast, but she couldn't make her stay any longer.
"I'd say bye to your dad, but he needs the rest." Lauren then walked over to me and pulled me into a hug. "I'll see you soon. Text me."
I nodded my head in her chest and I nearly flinched when I felt her kiss the top of my head before pulling away from the hug and grabbing her bag.
My dumbass was standing in my spot stiff as a board like a fucking idiot as Lauren walked out with a smirk.
"Everything okay?" My dad walked out of his room in a hurry at the sound of the front door opening and closing. He's still worried about my mom showing up, but he won't talk about it any.
"Yeah, Lauren just went home. No school today and more than likely for the rest of the week. The storm knocked down some power lines and one of the windows got crashed in by a tree." I tiredly wiped my eyes and walked to my room.
"Are they sending homework?" My dad asked me as he scuffed his feet back to his room.
"No. It isn't fair to those who don't have power. I'd check to see if the power was back on, but I don't know how." I stopped in my doorway.
"I'll go check and then go back to bed." My dad walked back into his room to put some shoes on before walking to the garage.
Not even ten seconds after he left, the front door opened. Oops, I forgot to lock it behind Lauren.
I quickly yet hesitantly walked back to the front door to see Lauren. Thank fuck.
"Hey, there are several fallen trees that I can't get by. Does your dad need help? I saw him in the garage." Lauren explained herself quickly, but kept her tone hushed.
"If he does he'll come back in." I rubbed my eyes again, trying to wake up. I wanted to go back to sleep, but I don't want to be rude with Lauren being here.
We watched the ceiling fan in the living room slow down before all of the kitchen utilities clicked on and a few scattered lights, and then the AC box turned on with a low hum.
"Oh thank god." I sighed in relief.
Lauren chuckled at my excitement. "You can go to sleep, Harper. I've got some work to do, and I've got my laptop."
"Are you sure?" Did I want to go back to sleep? Yes. Did I want to spend as much time as possible with Lauren? Also yes. "I don't want you to be alone and be uncomfortable because of it."
"Harper, I'm a grown woman. I'll be okay." Lauren gave me a soft smile.
My dad came walking back into the house with a tired huff.
"Oh hey Lauren. Roads blocked?" My dad asked in a more awake voice.
"Yeah, between the fallen trees and fallen power lines, there was no way I could drive through it." Lauren walked over to the breakfast table and pulled her laptop out. "I've got a little bit of work to do if that's okay."
"Of course. I'm going to go back to sleep for a bit." My dad patted me on the back on his way back into his room.
"You can go back to sleep, Harp. It's okay. I promise." Lauren looked over at me with a soft smile.
