Chapter 7

Something broke inside me as I stared at him incredulously.

"What? No, this can't be true."

"He manipulated you. He chose you to take part in a plot without your knowledge. Joseph is Peppino de Luca."

"And who the hell is that?"

"You never heard of him?" He seemed surprised. I shook my head. "Peppino de Luca is the son of a famous mafia boss. His father has disappeared. The police have been searching for him for years. In his absence, his son keeps the business moving. He's been involved in prostitution, drug smuggling, the murder of very influential persons, and a list of endless crimes."

His hold tightened as I shivered.

"You... you're saying I have been chatting with a mafia boss for a year?" I asked without a voice.

"Yes."

"But this can't be possible. He looked like a regular guy, and why on earth would a mafia boss chat with me?"

"Tell me, Cathy, how did you start chatting with him?" He queried.

"Well, I created an account with a dating site. He was a suitable match for me, so we exchanged emails at first and then we started chatting."

"And you've never met personally?"

"No. That's why I'm here to meet him. I thought we had something special. You might think I'm stupid, but I thought he could be the love of my life."

"I'm not here to judge you, but you should never trust a stranger." I glanced at his face from under my lashes.

"And it seems I'm doing it again," I murmured.

"Yeah right, well, in this case, you had little choice." He let go of my hand and shifted on the bed.

"You wouldn't be one anymore if at least you told me your name and something about you." He tipped his head and studied me.

"I can't tell you anything. The less you know about me, the better. You're already in deep shit. I don't want to worsen your situation."

"What's worse than almost getting killed by armed gangsters or being kept hostage by a stranger whom I don't know if he's an enemy or an ally?" The corners of his mouth tipped into a sexy smile.

"I should find you a name, hmm, let me think. Jordan? Or maybe Jack."

He laughed." You're quite a character, you know. How come a girl like you needed a dating site to find a man?" He asked.

"Sometimes I think you're either blind or you're being deliberately cruel." His laughter vanished and his expression hardened.

"I'm afraid I don't understand."

"I'm fat," I said in a low voice.

"You're an idiot." He said, getting up. "So, you're risking your life right now because of weight issues? You're attractive enough to get a man without a stupid dating site." He said, giving me a heart-stopping stare.

"Sure. I've been having trouble choosing. All those men trying to kiss me and have their wicked way with me. They couldn't keep their hands off me!" I said sarcastically.

"Your problem is not here," he said, touching my hip. "It's here." He said, pointing towards my mind. It's not the way you look, it's the confidence you have in yourself. Be happy with who you are and love yourself for others to love you."
