Tw: Self doubt

"I want to resign my place in 1A," Y/n stated flatly, their stern tone catching their homeroom teacher off guard. He nearly choked on his coffee, but stifled his surprise.

"Can I ask why?" If there was an issue with his teaching or the school itself, he needed to know.

Y/n paused, eyes squinting for a moment in thought as they pursed their lips, doing their best to seem calm, collected, and confident despite their racing heart.

"I don't think the hero business is for me." They coughed.

"Now that's a lie." Aizawa half-chuckled as he set down his coffee. "Want to tell me the truth now?" He gazed up at them from his seat at his desk in the teacher's lounge, the closest thing he had to an office area. His eyes were emotionless, just like the rest of his body language.

Y/n sighed and pouted slightly, knowing this wasn't going how they wanted and the direction wouldn't shift anytime soon. Their slob of a teacher could read people like an open book, despite his awful social skills. They shuffled their feet in passive frustration.

"Not really, no."

"Well, you've got to tell me something, Y/n, you can't just come in here, tell me you want to leave my class and the business you've dreamed about half your lifetime, and then not tell me why." He leaned back in his office chair, it rocking slightly, as he crossed his arms and rose a single eyebrow.

Y/n caved, knowing this would go nowhere, "I just feel like someone else could do better in my position." Their shoulders drooped.

"So, you want to leave my class to give someone else a chance? Who?" Now this caught his attention.

"Not anyone specific," the student half-whined, "I just think there are people who deserve this more, who would work harder and be a better hero."

"Y/n, I need you to think about why you think that." Was he about to force his student to open up to him? Yes, but not until they were ready. "When you have a real, truthful answer, then maybe I would consider it, but until then, you're stuck here." Aizawa wasn't sure if he had that power, but he already knew what Y/n was feeling. He was using this as a lesson to teach his student to not only keep their emotions in check but also be willing to open up when it was necessary. He knew at that age it was hard to open up, and he didn't want his student following his teenage self's footprints.

"Fine." They sulked back off to the dorms, tears of frustration pricking their eyes during the walk across campus.

A week later, Y/n completed the same walk in the opposite direction, once again knocking and awkwardly standing in the doorway of their grump of a teacher. After being bid permission to enter, they cautiously stepped in, placing themselves in the middle of the open space.

"Hello again, are we ready to be honest?" Aizawa gazed up from the papers he was grading and made a move to push them to the side, should the conversation go longer than he expected. He prepared for another excuse and waving it off again, telling them to try again in a few days with the truth for once.

"I'm not good enough."

He didn't expect that.

His eyes widened barely more than a millimeter in surprise. He had to keep himself from gawking at the student before him, who was now holding their shaking arms and trying to withhold their steadily overflowing tears.

"What makes you say that?" He responded simply, trying not to let his surprise or any sort of strain seep into his tone.

Y/n did not respond. They simply stood there, shielding their teacher from their now streaming tears.

He waited another moment for an answer, sighing when he didn't receive one.

"I beg to differ, and I'll tell you why." He stood from his desk chair, pushing the wheeled seat to the side. "You have a burning passion and a good heart inside you. You are incredibly strong and even stronger-willed," He walked around his desk to the other side, now standing in front of the student who didn't dare look him in the eyes, his hands on his hips. "You've come too far, gone through too much for me to agree with that statement. I have said this to other students and you are no exception: if you did not have potential, I would have expelled or transferred you forever ago. You have self-doubt, basically every hero does at some point in their life. There is nothing wrong with having it, but you cannot allow it to hold you back. Let's say this is something you even struggle with regularly, even then, I will not allow you to give up on your dream because of it. When you're in the top ten hero charts, I'll still be cheering you on, pushing this moment behind both of us. I'm not letting you quit, not now, not ever."

Y/n shrunk back, bitten by astonishment. They were too surprised to even weep tears of happiness at his words. He was usually so monotone and careless; this was new and unexpected. They froze, staring at him.

"What? Do you need something else? I'm not giving you a hug, if that's what you're waiting for." He crossed his arms again, leaning on his desk.

Y/n's lips tugged slightly into a frown, making the old grump scoff.

"Don't make that face... Fine, but this is a one-time thing, got it?" He stepped closer, arms wide as he wrapped them around the even more surprise-struck Y/n. They melted into his fatherly yet stiff embrace, wrapping their arms around to cling into his back, weeping into his shoulder. "You're going to make a great hero, okay?" He pulled away, gripping their shoulders for a moment before letting go. He gave them a pat on the head and then turned around, walking back around to his desk and grabbing at the papers he had pushed away before. "Alright, have a good rest of your day, I've got grading to do."

Y/n nodded, forcing their feet to carry them toward the office door. They smiled to themself as they repeated the walk to the dorms again, feeling their confidence slightly reinvigorated this time.
