chapter one:
a mother cradled her five day old baby. she sat next to the fireplace of the old rustic cottage. she looked out the window at the beautiful english country side and then at the night sky speckled with stars. her husband and adopted son where outside working with the crops. she looked down at the small sleeping bundle. she tried to focus on her sewing as she rocked the tiny baby. she cherished every moment of her baby's now deep sleep. it had been years since there was a baby in the house. it was wonderful to have a baby around again. suddenly, her adopted son burst through the door, "James," the mother scolded," you'll wake up!" she looked down at Rowena, she was still fast asleep. turning back to James her face went pale. his face and arms were covered with blood from the cuts and bruises that covered his body. but that was not the reason the mother went pale, there with James was the limp, bloodied, lifeless body of her husband. it took everything in her to have fortitude and remain calm for James' sake. she kept her thoughts clear and her voice steady. with shaking hands she gently and carefully set down the baby in her cradle. she spoke calmly and with authority to James, who dragged his father over to his bed. he explained what happened as best he could through his tears, which was very hard since he was only five years old. "there were these men," he said his voice trembling, "big, strong men, they said they needed hard workers who were little. they wanted me and Father said no." he paused to blow his nose, " they tried to grab me but Father wouldn't let them. the other one grabbed Father and hit him then they fighted for awhile. the men left after they knew that he was...was..." he could not get out the last words before he broke down in tears. his mother held him close and stroked his short dark blond hair. they both knew that Father was gone. after sometime the mother started to cry with James as the realization of her husband's death soaked in. the mother and James sobbed for hours, the tears just wouldn't stop coming. when James had gained enough composer to speak again, he wiped his eyes and spoke, "I will win the bread challenge for you on Father's place. he looked up to his mother, although her eyes were red from crying he could tell she was confused. "i will be the bread winner." he continued and for the first time in what seemed like forever, his mother smiled! she actually smiled! although he didn't know why his mother was smiling he smiled too. he let his mother engulf him in her embrace without protest as they sat together on the candle light.
