"I'm just sayin', Buchanan is a great name."
It's the fourth time in a week that Bucky has brought up a potential baby name. It is, however, the first time he's suggested a boy name. He's been firmly assured that they're having a girl. He has no evidence or old wive's tales to back up his claim, either. Only a gut feeling. He's so sure about it, that even Jules is convinced their baby is going to be a girl.
"If we have a boy, there is no way in Hell we're naming him Buchanan." Jules doesn't bother looking up from her phone as he maneuvers through traffic.
On the way to their five month check up, the baby's potential gender is the only thing they've talked about for the past week. His certainty grows with each passing day that he'll soon have two girls in the house. Jules is infected with his elation at the idea and has laid awake at night picturing Bucky with a little girl on his shoulders.
"That's my name." Bucky grumbles. He smiles at a thought she wishes she could see, "But we're having a girl so it doesn't matter, huh?"
She shakes her head. Even if Bianca strolled in and said they were having a boy with 1000% certainty, the name Buchanan still wouldn't be an option.
"I still like the name Diana." His fingers drum against the steering wheel. "Maybe Vivian?" He pulls the car into the lot, pushing the gearshift into park and then turning to look at her.
She drops her phone into her purse before un-clicking her seatbelt.
He whistles and she looks over at him. "J-Bird, what's goin' on in that head of yours, huh?"
Jules shrugs, squinting at the unusual nickname. Though she's no longer battling morning sickness (thank God) and her cravings have curbed substantially (she does still crave a chili dog every now and again), everything else is getting worse. Her back is achy, her boobs hurt constantly, her clothes are starting to really not fit. Her cutoff of caffeine isn't helping either.
Their weekly Lamaze class provides helpful, healthy remedies to a lot of stuff. As an ultrasound tech, she only knew the hard grade medical stuff to look for in pregnancies. She was learning everything else day by day.
"Back hurts. Tired." She mumbles, rubbing her forehead. "Kid's not doing me many favors lately."
He frowns before reaching over to splay his hand across her tummy. She's taken to borrowing his shirts for day to day activities until she musters the courage to drift into the maternity section of stores. "C'mon, malyshka, be good to your mama, yeah? She's doin' such a good job growing you, keeping you nice and safe til you're ready. Least you could do is ease up on her." His fingers rubbed soothing patterns as he spoke. And although she knew the baby could hear him, she didn't think she would listen. Weren't daughters notorious for ignoring their dads? "Tell ya what," Bucky gives one last loving rub before he leans back and meets her gaze again, "after lunch and Lamaze, we'll stop and grab some body pillows. Sound good?"
"Sounds perfect." She pushes open the car door, purse strap in her other hand. "Oh, couple things." He raises an eyebrow. "I like the name Bonnie."
Bucky swallows as tears immediately brim his eyes. He reaches and grabs on to her hand, squeezing once. "You wanna name her after my mom?"
She whispers a yeah, lacing her fingers with his. "And I think maybe I don't want to find out today. I think it'd be fun to wait until the baby's born to know." Also, if they're both super certain it's a girl, there's no harm in waiting. But in the off chance it's a boy, she'd like to be surprised.
"Yeah?" He grins and she nods in reply. "'Kay, we can wait. Anything else?"
The other topic went hand in hand with waiting. She explains that she wants to just pick out a short list of names. She doesn't want to decide on anything yet or put anything in stone. "I don't wanna name her til we see her. What if the name doesn't fit?"
