March 1942.
She was the only girl sitting there, she wasnt allowed to be there. She kept a strong composure as she felt the various pairs of eyes resting on her from around the room.
"this isnt going to work, you know they dont allow girls to join the army" Steve mumbled over to her, feeling bad for his best friend while he was basically in the same boat as her, only he was a boy, they just werent allowing him to join because he was smaller than what they wanted
"Im not going to stop trying until I get in Steve" the girl muttered to him with a small sigh and then continued to read the newspaper that she was holding in her small hands
"Boy, a lot of guys are getting killed over there" a boy next to Steve muttered out from behind his newspaper
"Rogers, Steven. Argent, Adira" the commissioner called from the front and Steve and Adira quickly fold their newspapers and stand up, placing the newspapers on their seat as they begin to walk up to the front of the room where they would be analysed for what felt like the hundreth time.
"it kind of makes you think twice about enlisting huh?" the boy asked again as he looked judginly at the small boy an girl who stood up, but neither of them were bothered by the look or tone that they were receiving from the man
"nope" Steve and Adira both said firmly and then went to the front of the room where they would be assessed.
"Rogers" the man said as he read the name off the paper, he then looked up and seemed taken aback as he looked at Steve, he let out a small sigh and then looked back down at the paper "what did your father die of?"
"mustard gas" Steve stated, not wanting to think about his father "he was in the 107th Infantry. I was hoping that i could be assign..." steve was cut off
"your mother?"
"she was a nurse in a TB ward. Got hit. Couldnt shake it" Steve answered trying to keep his composure as the girl behind him put a comforting hand on his arm and gave him a soft smile, knowing just how hard it was for Steve after all that he had went through.
The man looked down at all of the health issues that Steve had and didnt even bother to look up as he stated, "sorry son"
"look just give me a chance" Steve pleaded and Adira began to get angry with the man who didnt seem the least bit sympathetic
"you would be ineligable on your asthma alone" the man said and Adira pushed past Steve and glared up at the man in hatred
"this is so stupid, Steve is a good man, in fact, i'd bet my life that he is the best man that this country has to offer, this whole 'you would be ineligible on your asthma alone' nonsense is complete bullshit. Half the men in here dont really want to be here, but Steve is begging you to let him join, we arent going to win the war with men who have big muscles. We are going to win the war with Americans who's heart and spirit are bigger than their arms, those are the people who have what it takes" the girl spat angrily and the man in front of her looked furious
"This is why women arent fit to serve in the war, theyre weak and all they do is complain" the man spat angrily as he looked down on the girl "its a no for both of you."
"I suggest you watch what you say before i drop kick you through the wall" Adira growled angrily and slammed her hands on the table infront of her and stared up at the man, not backing down a he tried to intimidate her with his larger frame
