Emilie was born on Christmas Day 2009 after a long, painful, back-breaking labour. The moment I saw her, I instantly fell in love. It was a love I had never known before. A love that only a mother knows. A love that realises for the first time what life is worth, the physical and emotional cost of creating a whole person, a new little human, using only the mixed DNA of a man and woman in love. The instantness of birth and new life brings forth an instant new mother. Life suddenly has meaning, and you feel as though you have just solved the greatest puzzle of history when people ask "what is the meaning of life". You want to shout, "THIS! This is the meaning of life".

Then, after the instantness of birth, came the instant realisation that something was wrong. Terribly, terribly wrong. My baby wasn't breathing.

She was whipped away from me and a crowd of doctors surrounded her. I lay flat on the bed in shock, in a dream, a daze, a nightmare... what was happening? Is this real?
