                                  CHAPTER 17:-

                                =============

          Dr. Karl Wolfgang Heinz approached the foot-thick reinforced metal door. It had been installed five days ago to keep unwanted visitors and the inquisitively-inclined out of the state-of-the-art laboratory that occupied the huge room, until a week back one of the parlours in the vast mansion. He swiped his key-card in the card-slot built into the wall beside the door. There was a beep followed by the unveiling of a keypad above the slot and an eye-scanner. He punched in his password and presented his right eye directly in front of the scanner.

          Access denied, informed the LED panel on the pad.

          What the hell? He was irritated. Then he realized the security system wasn’t at fault. His iris was still coal-black from his satisfactory outing outside the walls of the mansion. The natural colour of his irises was purple-grey and the system had record of only that shade of his eyes.

          There was a time-gap of 10 seconds before an alarm was triggered on incorrect identification. Dr. Heinz composed himself and willed his irises to change their colour. The transition happened swiftly and he placed his purple-grey eye before the lens.

          The LED panel now read-

          Name: Dr. Karl Wolfgang Heinz

          Age: 113 years, 6 months, 22 days

          Code: W

          Clearance: 4-B

          The door slid smoothly into its receptacle. He entered the laboratory and cracked his knuckles. He was back where he belonged. In that magnificent place- his lab.

           His hallowed domain.

           A bank of computer monitors continuously blinked and blipped as data was processed and uploaded into storage banks. He inspected the most important screens and made a beeline for his mica-topped desk.

            The desk was burdened with a computer and printer-scanner, a compound microscope and an array of slides and foul-smelling petri dishes. Papers, pencils and clip-boards were arranged haphazardly in the remaining space. He slumped into his swivel chair and started rotating slowly.

            The large laboratory was divided into various work stations depending on the field in which research was being done. The mechanical and biotech departments vied for the lion’s share of space. He didn’t mind the offensive smells wafting to his nostrils from the biotech station where lots of cultures were being processed and various experiments with multi-hued liquids and semi-solids were taking place. The bioreactors, ovens, PCR machine, x-ray-spectrometer, centrifuges, safety cabinets, autoclaves, electrophoresis instruments, incubators, freezers and HPLC system made for an impressive display.

          The mechanical work-shop was cluttered with complex machinery, chambers, testing machines, tools and spare parts. There was even a small station for micro tech engineering.
