Letting Him Go

The room was dark as night

But I could still see your face

You were sitting at the table with her

I wished I had never stepped foot in this place

I watched you laugh and smile

Like the old happy couple you used to be

Then I thought to myself

Why in the world would he do this to me

You took her hand in yours

As I watched the look in your eyes

I watched you mouth the words

"Baby I'm sorry I lied"

I felt my mouth fall open

It took a while for that part to sink in

I got up from the table where I was seated

And I could feel the anger within

I walked up to your table

Where I sat down by your side

I kissed your lips so softly

And looked you in your eyes

I looked at the girl you were with

She looked right back at me

Then I looked down at your hands

And that's when I saw the ring

I knew right then you lied to me

Our whole relationship was a game

I felt a tear fall off my cheek

Onto the table and on a picture frame

Behind the glass was a man

I thought I knew but I was wrong

This whole time he had been married

How could I not see the signs all along

His wife looked him in the eyes

Then she asked him to explain

For once in his life he was speechless

He wasn't even man enough to take the blame

I got up from the table

And as I started to walk away

Something pulled me back

Something made me want to stay

I looked at this beautiful woman

As both of our tears fell

I told her I was sorry for what had happened

And sorry for putting her through hell

I walked away that night

And I never once looked back

But today as I was walking through the store

I saw her by a clothes rack

I walked into the department store

Thinking I would see them again

Then that same woman I once ruined

Looked at me and I could see the happiness within

I saw a smile on her face

As she walked up to my side

She looked me in the eyes and said

"You're the woman that saved my life"

I looked at her in disbelief

I was expecting to hear words of hate

But then as I glanced back at her

I knew what I did was something she would always appreciate

She let out a little laugh

She told me about that night and how she left

And now she had found the man she had always wanted

And that since that night she has never wept

The happiness I felt that day

Was out of my control

I was happy I had helped someone

Even if it was by letting him go
