My fingers danced along the cold stone of a marked grave, across the letters that made up the name Rosalia Rosier. A tight squeeze settled upon my heart and I blinked tears out of my eyes. Rosy and Rory until the end, that's what me and my sister swore to each other since we were three and five years old. Neither of us would come to know the tragedy that would come to be Rosy's death six years later. Untimely and an accident is what everyone else called her death. I didn't know what to call it, I didn't know what to do with all of the emotions boiling inside of me.
"You ready?" The voice of my grandmother filled my head and I looked up to the comforting, wrinkled face of my old grandmother, who was tasked with raising me and my sister when my parents were sent to Azkaban to serve punishment for their crimes in aiding Voldemort during the Wizarding War. That's right, today was the day I was heading to Hogwarts. I got my acceptance letter over the summer on my Birthday, and me and Rosy were filled with excitement. The wind picked up and the orange and red leaves that were scattered in the graveyard of my hometown, Alfriston, started blowing everywhere.
"I love you," I whispered to the grave before standing up and nodding to my grandmother, finally ready to get on the Hogwarts train. I clutched my large brown bag I packed with books and my robes and wand to take with me on the train. The rest of my school essentials were in my luggage which would be loaded on the train separately, at least my grandmother told me it would be. I kept my head down as me and my grandmother trudged through the leaves, kicking them up as we went until we reached the apparation point. I grabbed my grandmother's arm and with a crack that startled the woodland creatures around us, we disappeared and reappeared right in the King's Cross Station. My head was dizzy and I almost lurched as I held on tighter to my grandmother's arm. I wasn't used to apparation no matter how many times it happened to me. In fact, I dreaded having to take the apparation test when I was seventeen. The train station was packed with ordinary people carrying all sorts of items as me and my grandmother hurried through the crowd, to the brick wall between platforms nine and ten. My grandmother had sat me down earlier and explained everything that was going to happen. She didn't like to dilly dally and she was a nonsensical, business like woman with a fighting spirit. Nonetheless, she was the only family I had left and I loved her more than anything in my life.
"Just lean against the wall, darling," My grandmother told me and I nodded quietly, doing as she said and within seconds, the wall fell behind us and I stumbled out onto platform nine and three-quarters. Steam rose around us as all sorts of animals wove in between children and adult's legs. I stared at the train in awe, the black and scarlet steam engine sounding out a loud, shrill whistle as the chattering of students and parents alike filled my ears.
"Come on, let's get you on the train before it leaves." My grandmother muttered, grabbing my arm and we walked along the aisle where I spied many things around me, hooting owls, a small boy opening a box and multiple people screaming at whatever was inside, a large red headed family fighting each other, and many trolley's filled with luggage. My grandmother was carrying my suitcase and she gave it to the conductor to load onto the train, a quick five second stop, before we continued on to find an empty compartment I could sit in to wait for our departure.
"This is incredible." I breathed out in excitement. The troubling events of this morning fell away to the back of my mind as I focused all of my attention on the magical world to come ahead of me.
"If this is incredible, you might just faint at Hogwarts my dear." My grandmother amusingly said, giving me a look with her twinkling green eyes. I laughed a bit as she swung open a compartment door that I saw, was empty.
"Alright, you have everything. Don't forget, I'm proud of you no matter what house you're in. Also, write me every weekend, I want to hear everything. Be careful and Rory..." she grabbed both of my hands just as I turned around to face her and smiled at me, a genuine, soft smile that I've rarely seen her give.
