An Old Friend

"Fuckin alarm clock!" (Y/N) cried out, struggling to reach the noisy machine. She shuffled under the covers, turning her head to face the contraption that had interupted her beauty sleep. After a couple more lousy attempts to grab the alarm clock, (Y/N) shut off the alarm and plopped her face back onto the pillow, groaning angrily.

It's fucking Saturday! Why didn't I turn that shit off?!

Suddenly, (Y/N)'s eyes shot open.

Oh shit! It's Steven's birthday!

Within seconds (Y/N) threw the covers  and plopped off the bed, heading straight for the closet. She frantically searched through the hanging fabric, finally stopping at the star imprinted T-Shirt Steven had given her, the mark of a Crystal Gem. (Y/N) smiled, taking in the joyous memory. The thought didn't last long, as she quickly struck herself out of her haze and continued picking out the rest of her clothes. She settled on the T-shirt, accompanied by a matching pink sweater, one also imbrindened by the yellow star, a pair of blue jeans, and some black shoes. It wasn't much of a difference from her usual style, but she only wore that T-shirt on special occasions. When she was satisfied with her look, (Y/N) headed to the bathroom to finish up the rest of her attire.

....

The party was set to begin at 6:00pm. It was no doubt that a good portion of humans and gems would attend the celebration, given Steven's popularity. Despite the late start, (Y/N) made (somewhat of) an effort to set her alarm early because, well, she hadn't gotten him a present yet. Over the years (Y/N) has given multiple gifts, from a new instrument to a painting of the crystal gems fending off evil from Earth. Eventually, those gifts covered almost everything Steven could possibly ever want or need, and it had come to the point where (Y/N) couldn't decide what to give him anymore. Every gift, to her, had to be special, a sort of "thank you" for everything he had done for her, yet now, she had nothing left to manifest in order to get that message across. So, over a good few hours, (Y/N) had been frantically searching for a suitable present. Each hour passed quicker with the last, and each missed opportunity brought (Y/N) into a deeper inner turmoil.

God dammit! I'm such a shit friend right now. I gotta get him something! It's be selfish if I got him nothing! God what would he think? Would he think I didn't care or that I didn't think he deserved it? Would he think that I don't care about him anymore or that I didn't need him? Would he think that he didn't need me? Shit I can't go there now! I got half an hour left and still don't have shit. God I'm such a bad friend, such a bad friend...

"Hey (Y/N), are you alright?" a voice interupted, causing (Y/N) yelp and quickly turn around, facing the stranger. It was Steven, a look of worry complexing his features.

"Oh, Steven, you scared me," (Y/N) nervously spout out before trying to fix her composure. "Nah, I'm fine, just had a bit on my mind is all," (Y/N) replied, waving the current events off.

Steven let out a disappointed sigh. He walked up to (Y/N) and said, "Look, (Y/N), you know I can tell when something's wrong. It seemed like earlier you were having some of those "thoughts" again. Please, if you need to talk, just ask. I'm here for you."

(Y/N) felt some tears welling up in her eyes, but she quickly wiped them away to prevent Steven from being even more concerned. "Really Steven, it's fine. Besides, you got a party waiting for you. That's something more important for you to worry about."

(Y/N) attempted to walk away, only to be stopped by Steven placing his hand on her shoulder. (Y/N) looked back at him, meeting his gaze. "A friend in need is more important to me than anything. Besides, they can have some fun without me for a bit, " Steven finished with a assuring chuckle.
