My feet pounded against the pavement in haste and urgency as I turned into the alley. The splattering of the rain stung my face, my breath uneven and ragged. What have I gotten myself in again? The rush of adrenaline teared through my veins, when I hear my pursuers trailing behind me, was almost painful. I made a sharp turn into the abandoned, rusty sheds and lightly closed the door. The stench of dirt and grime lining the walls was repulsive, so I held my breath with every ounce of strength I had.
Only a mere half an hour before this, I was on my way back from school. Teachers piling homework, students chattering, bells ringing...normal. I was only ten minutes away from home before I felt something, someone trailing from a distance. I looked behind me and saw nothing except for a few cars blinded by the heavy rain. It wasn’t until I heard running, my ears perked up and instinctively made a hasty escape. These men or whatever they were pursued me with such speed and agility it was almost inhuman, almost like me.
I knew I was different, from the other students, from my friends. I couldn’t tell anybody about what was happening to me, not even my parents. Last year, when I turned sixteen, something changed. The second I opened my eyes that October morning my sight was impeccable along with my scent. I could smell the dying flowers outside my window, I could feel the air move and transform. It wasn’t until later that day when I found out how fast I was, how agile I was, when I was previously not as. It may seem great and all, better sight, better speed, better scent, better reflex, but there was one drawback, it was the piercing, throbbing, agonizing headache. It isn’t like your average headache/migraine, it’s like being stabbed, literally, stabbed in the head repetitively every night for almost four hours.
All I could think about, while inside of the shed, are the minutes until I become consumed with the agony of my quotidian headaches. I glance at my watch and calculated when the next headache was going to attack until I heard the shed door fly off it’s hinges and felt the droplets of rain again. I shrunk against the rusty shovels and felt around to find a weapon I could use. My fingers found the handle of a very hefty pick. Their footsteps echoed deeper into the shed, I balanced myself with the handle of the pick and got a good grip on it. With my abnormal speed I sprang from the corner and swung the pick in the general direction. As if he had already anticipated my moves, a rush of force knocked the weapon out of my hand, landing with its head firmly against the wall.
Run, Run, Run, Run...My mind commanded, but my body did not obey, as if I wasn’t in control of my body. The unfamiliar man stepped closer, he was a good ten feet away from me, but I couldn’t make out his face. His he was at least 6’0, lean but muscular with broad shoulders. I slowly backed away from him, and I could see a quick flash of teeth as he smirked at me. He was like a lion and I, I was his prey, that bloodthirsty grin appeared again. He was less than 5 feet away from me, and I could make out his damp golden hair clinging to his forehead and his fierce golden eyes sparkling with wonder and viciousness. “Well aren’t you a little trouble-maker.” hesnarled, his voice was smooth, dark, and mellifluous. “I do enjoy a chase, but unfortunately we do not have the time.”
