I quickly pulled out my schedule and find my locker number and home room class. Then I pushed through the noisy hallways to find my locker. As soon as I twisted my combination, I felt my phone vibrate. The text message was from my best friend Lindsey. It read 'hey Abby! Happy first day of school! What is your home room and locker number? I'm in Miss Peterson's home room and my locker number is 862! Text me! :)' I quickly responded back: 'I'm in Miss Peterson's, too! My locker is 849! See you in home room!!' Excited to see my best friend, I threw my books for later classes in my locker and hurried to Miss Peterson's room. When I walked in her door I was immersed in the second wonderful smell of my morning. Lavender. Breathing in the wonderful aroma, I scanned the room, looking for my new teacher and best friend. "Abby!!" Lindsey squeaked. "I'm so glad you're here!!!! "Girls," a new voice said. "Will you please take a seat so that I can take roll? "Oh!" I exclaimed. "Sorry Miss Peterson! We'll sit down. Come on Lindsey." We both found our assigned seats at the back of the room and waited for instructions. "Good morning, class" Miss Peterson said. "Good morning" we all replied. "Very good. You are all very well mannered. Or at least appear that way to me. I am your English teacher and we will be writing many things together. But not today!" Miss Peterson said. "Today, we will be doing an icebreaker activity. Does anyone know what this is?" A girl named Amanda raised her hand and Miss Peterson called on her. "An icebreaker activity is something you do to get to know people "That's right um- what is your name honey? "My name is Amanda. "Oh. Good job, Amanda!" Miss Peterson said. "For our icebreaker activity, we will be doing a scavenger hunt. Each of you will get a piece of paper with the things you need to find. You will need to find people who have a certain number of brothers and sisters, dogs, cats, along with many other things." Miss Peterson told us. "Can I have a volunteer to pass out the scavenger hunt papers?" Miss Peterson asked. I raised my hand and she called on me. "What is your name, dear? "I'm Abigail. "Alright, Abigail, will you pass out these papers? "Sure Miss Peterson" I said. I stood up from my seat and collected the papers from her desk. I walked around the room, handing out papers to everyone. After everyone had a paper, I gave the extras to Miss Peterson and sat down at my seat. "I will give you 15 minutes to try to fill out your paper. Before you start, I forgot to tell you something. When you find a person who applies to one of the questions, they have to sign their name on the line. Alright, class: ready, set, go!!!" This is fun, I thought as I wandered through the classroom, asking people questions. I wonder if Miss Peterson always does fun things like this. A voice snapped me out of my thoughts and back to reality. "Hello Abigaaiil," a snooty voice drawled. Ugh, I thought. Theresa Magnolia, the most popular girl in school, not to mention the meanest. "Hello Theresa" I sighed. There was no point being rude to Theresa, she'd be waaaay ruder back. Either that or start a rumor that would make you wish you weren't alive. Back when we were in sixth grade, Theresa had told everyone that I sucked my thumb all the time. Naturally, it wasn't true, but that didn't stop everyone for making "goo, goo, ga, ga" sounds. Completely ruined my reputation. Anyway, back in the real world, Theresa was looking at me expectantly. "What" I asked. "I asked you a question Ab-by. "Well I didn't hear you because nothing you say is worth my attention" I countered, smiling on the inside. Theresa scowled and stalked away, her group of cronies following faithfully behind her. I glanced at the clock on the wall and frowned. I only had 8 more minutes to complete the scavenger hunt. I glanced down at my paper and started to mingle with my peers. Everyone compared results and before I knew it, the bell had rung for the next class.
