I don't want to get out of bed, not because I'm tired, but because I don't want to face the reality life has set for me these past few weeks.
She groaned as she made her way out of bed and trudged to the bathroom. Her toothbrush stood tall in the marble holder, its worn-out bristles doing their best with dying stamina.
She gave herself a hard stare in the mirror. Her dark brunette hair that barely touched her back laid unkempt as a strand sat comfortably on the bridge of her nose. Her glaucous eyes that were once lit up with jubilation and joy, now faded with uninterest and hidden despair.
There was once a time, when Juno de Domhnall was happy-- or at least content. Her life was not snazzy, her family didn't own a nice big house with a pleasant view of the Hudson river like the average girls she read about did. She lived in a decent-sized apartment with her mother and 2 sisters, living small yet happy with whatever the day could bring. Her life was full of color and emotions as she moved through each day like it was a blessing.
Now, her life is dull and lacks any sort of meaning. What was once a home full of joy and smiles, is now a refuge of mourning and despair-- and the life that was once a blessing has turned into an invasive curse following an empty feeling she cannot seem to shake.
After a minute of gargling, she spit into the sink and wiped her mouth with a grey cloth, then proceeded into the shower and turned on the pipe as the water trickled down into the bristles of the black mat and into the drain. Everything seemed to lack color lately. She glazed her hands through her hair, allowing the water to drench each strand-- she thought about how today could play out.
She swung open the bathroom door as she adjusted her towel around her petite hourglass figure. Tip-toeing across the apartment complex in an attempt to reach her room in peace. However it only resulted in Elowen stopping her in her tracks.
"Only in a world with fairies and dragons would my sister wake up before 11, are pigs flying?" She asked with a chuckle, failing to read the lack of amusement in Juno's eyes.
"Only in a world where my father's funeral is just hours away is when I would even bother to take a morning shower." She replied in a sarcastic manner, pushing past her sister.
She continued to her room as Elowen tagged along in silence.
A naïve young girl, Elowen was 15 and shared the best of her sister's features-- her welcoming smile and full cherry lips. Her dopey ears were what separated her from the rest, she got that from her father.
Elowen observed as Juno shuffled around her room, grabbing her underwear set and struggling to clip the bra. She watched her sister struggle with a puzzled expression, waiting for her to ask for help.
Juno gestured for her sister to come over, clearly defeated by the bra's fine straps. Elowen sighed as she got up from the dresser and went over to the stand-up mirror and stood behind her sister.
"Thank you." Junnie mumbled under her breath with a faint smile as her sister clipped the last row. She continued to her closet to look for a dress to wear.
"Do you mean to tell me you didn't even pick what you were going to wear beforehand?" Elowen asked with a very judgmental tone. She sat on the bed and gave her sister a cold stare as she yanked out a plain black dress.
"That depends, did you?"
Juno slid on the dress and continued to the bathroom to fix her hair and makeup. The silence was loud, and the elephant in the room stood still.
