I watched Jaume and the blonde fairy. She giggled as he played with her hair. I realized now that the love between Jaume and I had never existed. But I had saved his life. I had a debt to pay off. Striding forward out of my hiding place, my head held high.

"I don't think this is the best way to treat the girl who saved your life." I said.

"Donella- I'm not- it's just."

"He is." the blonde fairy said. "Look, Donelle, or whatever your name is. Face it. He doesn't love you anymore."

"And I don't love him. I just need...payment." I glared at Jaume as he blanched.

"Nixie- just, go hide. Donella can get dangerous when she's angry." he said. Nixie- the blonde fairy, ran and hid behind some bushes. I could still see her stupid blonde hair.

"You're going to kill me, aren't you?" I asked Jaume.

"You know I can't do that."

"What were you doing with the fairy of sunshine and rainbows?"

"She's right. She's much more powerful than you are, and I love her more than I ever loved you."

"That's nice. But it appears as if you have to find some way to give me the payment."

"How about in coins."

"Sonon needs a soul."

"That's too bad, then, isn't it?"

"You'll die."

"No I won't. Because you won't let me. Because there's no one else to take care of Alfi, is there?"

I heard my mother and father fighting. They shouldn't be, it went against fairy code, but they couldn't help it. She being a fairy and him an elf they hardly ever got along. (Elves did not have wings, fairies did)

My father slammed his fist down on the table- I could hear it from my room, which was above them. They argued all the time, but I could hear my father storming around like I never have before. I heard my mother crying, footsteps, and then a door slam.

She left.

I knew it. I knew that one day she was going to snap, and leave. I heard footsteps coming up the stairs towards my room, and I turned towards my door as my father walked in.

"What did you do to mom?" I asked, but my father didn't answer. Instead he glanced around my room.

"Pack up." he ordered.

"What?!"

"Pack up. You're leaving." he grabbed my bag and threw it at me. I quickly shoved a few of my clothes, knives and herb pouches into it. "Good. Now come on." he grabbed my arm and dragged me outside, where he climbed into the carriage and whipped the rats into running.

"Where are you going?"

"To your mother."

"You're going to find mom?"

"No. Nixie isn't your mother. I thought a clever girl like you would have guessed that by now."

"Wait- Nixie isn't my mother?"

"No, of course not."

"Why are you taking me to my real mother?"

"Because I can't deal with you any more. I have to go, and I can't drag you along."

"Why can't Nixie take care of me?"

"Do you really think she wants to take care of a girl she is in no way related to? She's young and beautiful, and she doesn't want you or me tying her down." My father sounded gruff, but I could tell he was sad. He had, despite all the arguments, loved Nixie more than the moon itself.
