Chapter 7: The Assault On Both Sides

It was early morning, the sun starting to rise. In the middle of the night, somehow you and Sai ended up in the spooning position. You were unaware of the close intimacy happening, but you were instinctively rubbing his hands. Sai placed his chin in the crook of your shoulder. You woke up with Sai's arm wrapped around you.

You looked behind you to see that he was still asleep. He unconsciously pulled you back against his sleeping form. He held you tighter and rested his chin on top of your head.

Wow... Did Sai just... I did I- were we just.... , you flushed at this newfound realization.

You decided that it was time to get up and tried to escape from him and his makeshift trap. You wiggled around a bit, trying to free yourself, which ended up Sai.

"Hey, good morning...y/n you can stop moving now" He chuckled.

You stopped moving and a blush crept on your face.

Sai released you and apologized.

"Sorry about that. You just looked so peaceful there that I didn't want to wake you up," you chuckled.

Sai cleaned up and held out his hand, offering it to you. You grabbed it and thanked him.

'He's been doing that a lot recently'

Your mind started to wander again, this time to what had happened not too long ago.

Sai is always making me go red, why can't I get a hold of myself around him.

Both of you had gathered your ninja gear and cleaned up the area, and picked up the trail from where you guys left off and traveled farther into the forest.

-tiny time skip-

You guys halted when you realized that you couldn't track the spies' trail.

" Shit we lost them" You cursed.

"Y/n it's fine, look there's a camp we can look for to get information up ahead in there" he reassured you, pointing in front of you. He placed a hand on your shoulder, lightly rubbing them in a reassuring, comforting way.

"Yeah I guess you're right Sai.... thank you, I didn't even think of that. I'm glad that we went on this mission together," you reply.

You placed your hand on his hand, reciprocating his small gestures of affection.

The 2 ninjas traveled towards the camp. It contained a tent and the area surrounding it had empty bags and a freshly put up fire. There was fresh trash around the ground.

'The area looks like it was abandoned... did the suspect know we were tailing him and left it behind before he was apprehended and questioned? ' Y/n started to wander off to investigate.

'The spies probably sensed us following them and booked it before he was caught and questioned'. Sai thought to himself, picking up a strange piece of fabric that was left behind.

Both of you discussed your roles in how to assess the situation. It was decided that you would stand guard and look out for any enemies that would try to come back. Sai would use his jutsu to check for traps and set up surveillance.

Sai used his jutsu to create a bunch of mice to monitor the area from a distance, notifying him of any disturbances. The mice scurried away through the forest. He put his scroll away and took out his sword. The sound of it unsheathing had made you turn your attention towards him.

He decided to motion for you to come towards him. You followed without hesitation, standing in front of him. He places his hand on your back to pull you closer to him. He pulled you close to his face, bending over a bit so he was level with your ear.

"I'll check out the inside of the tent and you will take it outside," he whispered gently.

Your face was heating up from the close proximity.

'I'm sure he did that because he didn't want anyone to hear him. Definitely not to mess with me.' You thought to yourself.

Unintentionally you smirked, this caused Sai to be confused and worried. You were snapped out of your thoughts by his touch on your shoulder. You placed your hands on top of his, you gently rubbed and trace your fingertips against his hands. It was at this time you noticed the hand size difference. Your face heated up at this finding.

"Y,n.. you know what to do right?" Sai chuckled.

"Yes Sai, I understand the plan" You replied.

He nodded. He took his hand off your shoulder. And he turned towards the way of the tent and started to make his approach towards it.

-Inside of the tent-

(30 minutes pass)

"Damnit, there's nothing here". Sai cursed

There were scattered papers and objects on the floor. Sai noticed an odd piece of paper peeking out from a pile in the corner.

Huh? now what's this?

He chose to pick it up.

He put the paper in his bag along with his ninja stuff and walked outside.

You rushed over to Sai as you saw him emerge from the tent. You sensed enemies coming.

Not even a few moments after the mice had rushed back from their posts, confirming your suspicions.

"SAI! Did you find anything in the tent?" You asked.

He was about to reply to your question but was cut off by his realization of the situation.

"Y/n we have trouble. There are enemies headed our way."

"Yeah, I felt them too."

You and Sai got ready to defend yourself against the enemies.
