Common name: Mer

Size: The average "height" of a Mer, assuming one measured from the top of the head to the tip of the flukes on their tails, is five inches.

Tail: Besides the tiny size of Mers, another obvious part of them that separates them from humans is the fact that they have a tail like that of a fish instead of legs. The body of the tail is light blue, and the two even flukes that go to the sides are deep blue. The scales are overlapping. They use the same hole on their tail for both laying eggs, which is how they reproduce and can only be done by females, and taking dumps. It's hard to see, and they have a lot of small turds, like a rabbit. The eggs are larger and are not brown, but the size makes laying them painful like how a human mother giving birth is in pain.

Fins: Mers also have three fins on their upper body. They are not like the fins of sharks, instead being much more flexible and soft, like the fins of some bony fish. They have a fin on their backs, and they have a fin on each forearm, between their wrists and their elbows. They have light blue scales around each fin, but most of their arms and torso are covered in humanoid skin.

Other body parts: Mers have webbed fingers with larger fingertips. This makes them more useful for swimming. They have gills on their cheeks for breathing underwater, but they also have functional lungs like those of mammals, letting them breathe both air and water. They are not well suited for life on land, though, due to their lack of legs. Due to their ability to breathe both air and water, Mers have eyelids that keep their eyes from going dry when above the water. I don't count fat as a body part, but Mers are often chubby. The fat helps streamline them and keep them warm.

Things I'd rather not say in the story: Mers do have reproductive organs depending on their sex. Male ones each have a penis and two balls, while females have vaginas that they don't use for birth, only using them in sex to fertilize the eggs inside of them. However, all Mers have a passive magic effect on them that makes all humans and every other Mer see the area where the genitals are as smooth, but the Mer sees their own genitals. They also know that no one else can see it, so they don't wear pants. Females use the anus to lay their eggs, and they are considered pregnant when their eggs have not yet been laid. They can only lay a single egg at a time. Mers fertilize their eggs before they are laid, so they have protective shells like the eggs of reptiles and birds.

Mers are smart enough to use and make tools, but they lack the means to forge metal in water. This means that they are often limited in terms of what they can make.
