Down, far below the ocean's surface lay the home of the mermaids. Their kingdom was made out of corals and pearls- the sand a shade of blue and flowers of every colour, contrasting to the blue that surrounded them. In the midst of the colour and splendour stood a castle. It was made of the finest corals and oyster pearls and was home to the widowed king, his mother and six daughters.
They had a family tradition that when each daughter turned 15 years of age, she would be allowed to journey above the sea and see the world above. The youngest of these sisters was entranced by the world above through what she had seen from shipwrecks and tales from her grandmother and older sisters.
As each sister went up to the surface, they all encountered wonders and excitedly retold their experiences to the others, who all listened in an eagerness and hunger for knowledge. The youngest daughter waited excitedly for her 15th birthday so that she too may see the world that her sisters had so vividly described.
On her 15th birthday, the little mermaid was elated and impatient to see the world above and determined to love it no matter what. Her grandmother patiently dressed her in the royal regalia, despite her impatient whines. With the heavy garland adorned with oysters and their pearls on her tail and a crown of white flowers placed upon her head, she started her journey to the world above.
When she finally broke the surface of the ocean, it was already evening, the sun's rays dipping over the ocean and painting the sky in pinks, golds and purples- entrancing the little mermaid. Hearing a type of pleasant music that was unheard of to her young ears, she tore her eyes away from the sky and found a boat decorated with lights where the music was coming from. Feeling brave, she swam closer to the boat and saw people dancing. The women were wearing long and swishy gowns that twirled wonderfully when they danced and the men had plain shirts tucked into their elegant pants. They were all laughing and seemingly celebrating an event. The little mermaid was enthralled by all of these new experiences and started to dance slightly to the music, before it was suddenly cut short, much to her disappointment. Checking why the music had stopped, she saw a young man not much older than her step out of a room on the boat, the rest of the attendees bowing to him. The little mermaid paid him no mind and felt that since the music was done, so was the party.
She swam away from the boat, humming the merry tune they were playing just minutes before, excited to see more of the town at night, when there was a loud noise in the sky that startled her and when she turned to look at what had caused the noise, she was greeted with thousands of little coloured lights decorated the sky in beautiful shapes. The little mermaid had never seen anything like this before and was captivated by them.
Alas, her time above the water had to come to a close, and with one last longing look behind her and at the sights and scenery of the earth above, she swam back down to meet with her family. She arrived home and was more than happy to tell her sisters of her experiences- despite most of them having already been above the surface. She painted them pictures of what she saw with her words, each scene more vivid than the last, her talent of storytelling and way with words evident in each sound she made.
