Sixteen years ago there were two best friends
Who loved to laze around beneath the summer sun.
His name was Myungsoo and her name was Suzy
And all was well with them.

They would catch cherry blossoms falling from a tree
Or make daisy chains in the middle of a field
Or jump on the crunchy crimson leaves
Or make snow angels and snowmen.
It didn’t really matter what season it was
So long as they were together.

Twelve years ago while they were sitting on a bench
The two friends talked about having a life of their own
But they stopped halfway because they could never imagine
Living without each other and despite the deafening silence
They were able to hear what the other was thinking about.

Eight years ago Suzy received a love letter and she showed it to Myungsoo
Hoping it was him all along but he told the truth he told her it wasn’t him
And something seemed to shatter inside of her but she brushed it away
With a smile and he asked if
She would give that guy a chance and she answered
With a playful “Maybe.”
And so with tears threatening to emerge from Myungsoo’s eyes
He excused himself while thinking about his own love letter
He had kept for so long inside his stupid old bag.
In the middle of it all he found himself seething,
“If only, if only, damn it! If only.”

A year after that Myungsoo found Suzy
Crying in the corner of her bathroom
With the shower turned on
And she was sitting beneath it
She was sobbing uncontrollably
And her white shirt was soaked through
The pain she felt in her heart bounced
Against the pristine walls.
Myungsoo quickly joined her
In that suffocating cubicle without even thinking.
He didn’t care if he got drenched
Because all he wanted was to cradle her in his arms
While promising her that everything will be all right
And he was thankful for the water
Because that perfectly hid his tears
Suzy told him what happened
And that was how Myungsoo realized
That he shouldn’t have let her go just to have her heart broken.

Five years later they were walking in the park,
Walking hand in hand
Beneath the smoldering heat of the sun
And their hands were both sweaty
But not one of them found it disgusting
So they carried on walking
Until Myungsoo suggested they should rest for a while.

“Will you marry me?” Myungsoo blurted out and
He wanted to slap himself unconscious
Because that was the most pathetic and unromantic way of confessing
But what else could he do it was all out in the open
He could only watch Suzy’s eyes widen up
And he had to hold every fiber of his being together
Just to keep himself from kissing her.

“Will you marry me?” he repeated as he pulled out
The crummy love letter
He had kept for years
Which pretty much contained
The very stirrings of his heart.

Suzy bit her lower lip and gently took
The envelope from his trembling hands
And tears welled up from her eyes
And Myungsoo’s anxiety went up by a notch
But before he could even speak
Suzy smiled and said, “I saw this in your bag years ago,
And I secretly hoped it was for me.”

On a certain spring day Suzy was wearing a pretty white dress
And Myungsoo matched her attire with a sharp tuxedo
And there were many people in the garden they used to play in.
They used to make promises
But at that moment it was a different kind of promise
It was a promise which guaranteed
They would be together so long as they were alive.

To this very day there are two best friends
Who love to laze around beneath the summer sun.
His name is Myungsoo and her name is Suzy
And all is well with them.
