Chapter 3

The static was with us for about 10 minutes or so, in that time neither of us said anything. We just sat there in the office, thinking about the past events. My god too think a few hours ago I was sitting there thinking to myself what an amazing and ground breaking discovery might be, I really wanted to be back in that moment now! I look around to Simon, ‘fuck it man call me when Simmons Calls back I need a smoke!’ He just nodded and went back to staring and thinking about whatever it is that someone like Simon thinks about in these sorts of times.

I made my way out on to the small balcony and pulled out a cigarette. After everything that had just happened I think this was very needed, in fact a strong drink and 30 of these where needed after the past events but this would do for now. I lit one and took in a long draw, thumbing away at the Zippo, Clair had bought for my 30th birthday, only 6 months ago and out of all the gifts I had received it was the one that I really did love the most.  I was well known for having a brain mouth issue, before I knew what I was thinking if it seemed like a good idea I was suggesting it and wanting to get it done right away. Hence the reason for the engravement on the side of it, KEEP YOUR FEET ON THE GROUND.

I smiled it seemed rather applicable to what was going on right now. I took another deep draw in and cleared my head. Ok, this may not be how anyone had seen it going but nonetheless we are obviously dealing with life from another world here. One of the greatest discovery’s in mankind, I mean come on that has to be at least worth smiling about, for all we know this is their way of saying hello. A rather bad way perhaps, but nonetheless it might be. I laughed to myself and finished my smoke and headed back in.

Simon looked over smiled and with a rather hollow tone ‘feel better?’

‘Surprising yes I do, you sure you don’t want to take the bad habit up?’ he broke a smile and shook his head, weather it was just to say no, or in dislike at the habit, well you would know as well as I would. ‘I’m heading to the control room for a few minutes let me know if Simmons comes back on the line.’ Simon once again just nodded and went right back to staring.

I walked out of the office and everyone was in the same state as Simon, I clapped my hands and everyone jumped right out of there trance, ‘Ok everyone go take 20 minutes and shower your heads and collect your thoughts, no phone calls I don’t want this being leaked we need to get a grab on it.’ With that everyone got up and made their way out, some were coming around and discussing the events others were walking as if they were at a funeral. I turned to go back into the office when I heard the soothing tone of Clair ‘Ethan, Ethan!’ she came running over ‘what’s wrong?’

‘Is there anything I can do, I feel rather useless at the moment and need something to do.’ Her bright eyes just stared back at me from behind her glasses.

‘You can take a break and clear your head, believe me Clair I don’t think there will be another chance to do so soon.’

‘Very well, would you or Mr. Masters like some fresh coffee?’

‘Yes Clair that would just what the doctor ordered I think’ I wasn’t overly wanting coffee but she was clearly as lost as everyone else was, all be it somewhat more proactive about it, and if that would make her feel better, well you can never have too much coffee. She just smiled and headed out of the office, turning around and giving another smile as she left.

I made my way back into the office, I got in and not two seconds later Simon was beckoning me over. The static must have left us, and the fun conversation with the Americans was about to take place. As I walk over I could see he had my headset already in his hand, he seemed to have pulled himself together in the short time I had been in the other room. ‘Ethan, Simmons is coming back on again, he’s about to talk to the yanks.’ He handed me the headset and I dawned it on and made myself comfortable, Simon seemed to be looking forward to it. The beep came and everyone was on talking away and suddenly the idea of coffee didn’t seem like such a bad idea.
