Synopsis

In 1684, Lady Anne Marie Mercier is promised in marriage to Lord Gerard La Ponte, a man that she has only met once when she was but a little girl. Highly Catholic in a Catholic country, Anne Marie has nothing to fear...until she meets her betrothed. In a moment of drunken desperation, one month before their wedding Gerard lets leak that he is a follower of the teachings of John Calvin. Her life in danger and her soon-to-be husband a criminal, in an instant Anne Marie's life is thrown into a whirlwind. But, in the midst of the chaos will she be able to hang on to her principles? In 1903 Elisabet La Ponte (known as Lizzie to most) is traumatized and tired of her life. The Second Boer War did not do her any favours as an Afrikaans woman, and with her family farm burned to the ground and her younger sister, Marta dead from starvation, she hates the English enough to murder. Thoughts of revenge against the Khaki who captured her, drives her to plan his murder. But when she meets Keith Smith, an English soldier, Lizzie's hardened heart can't help but be enthralled by this war-torn man. Two broken people can fix each other, can't they?

In 2021, Sophie La Ponte is staring down 23. The last year of her life has been spent in a lockdown and her plans and dreams are flushed down a very shiny and robust toilet. With a dead-end job in a dead-end country, she aims to take back her life. So the day after she, rather late might we add, gets her driver's license she takes off to her old family home of Franschoek to rediscover her life. With decades of strong women in her genes, Sophie settles down in a strange flat and a strange job with a strange and handsome man who doesn't seem to know anything else but to be charming. With her whole life hanging in the balance, will she finally find her peace?
