It's amazing how everything you think you have figured out, can change in an instant. How all the work people have done for so many years can be destroyed in the blink of an eye.

My mom came shrieking in to my room, bursting the door open and yanking my blankets away

"What th-" I stared at her, tears and fear in her eyes and immediatly knew this was not the time for questions. She looked on the verdge of breaking down in sobs and I stood immediatly, I was about to say something but something caught my eye, a flash from outside my bedroom door, as I walked closer I saw the raging flames of a spreading fire, or was it fire? It looked exactly like fire, except it was a glowing yellow-green that had light radiating off of it. I don't know what it was, but I felt the burning heat of it and knew I shouldn't get close.

"Mom we have to get out!" I shout and run to my window. I look down at the flames rising up the outside too, we couldn't jump down from this height, into the flames below, we'd be jumping into sure death.

"Iris, come with me" she says, shaking her head and turning towards my door, she opens it all the way and now I can see how the flames have spread. They're lit all over the top floor of my house, I'm sure they're on the stairs as well. There is no where to go except up to the attic,my mom knows what I'm thinking and let's down the latter from my cieling. I climb up, I know she's right behind me, we get to the top and I slam the latch shut. I stand and reach the tall window, I open it and climb out onto my half broken roof. I can see now, the houses around me, they're all lit up too. I hear the screams of panicked people and the cries of pain from inside the houses. I stand in shock. I feel my legs freeze up and I can't speak. My mom is looking around the ground for someone to help or a way down, I feel useless, lost. Confused. All I do is stand on the roof that is beginning to cave in. That's when I hear a familiar scream, that brings me to reality, I have to do something. My thoughts are a mess and I can't think clearly, everything around me sounds muffled when I see my brother across the street, he screams in pain as the flames begin to consume him into the yellow green light and heat and all I can do is run forward. I don't know what's below me, all I do is run until I get to the edge of the roof and then I jump.
