Chapter 24
Kayla was sprawled on the couch, her spoon in her mouth as she watched me pacing. Running my fingers agitatedly through my hair, I sighed angrily. The stark contrast between her ease and my tension was obvious to even a blind man. It would be comical if I was not hung up on my problem.
“You’re going to wear out the floor, Julia,” Kayla murmured around the spoon.
I frowned, arms folded as I threw a mild glare at her before continuing to pace.
“Wonder what we should have for dinner...” Kayla trailed off, staring out the window.
Rubbing my face, I ignored the gnawing hunger in my stomach. I had forgotten to take lunch.
“Maybe Chinese,” she mumbled, shifting on the couch. “Or Indian food.”
Thud. Thud. Thud. My footsteps echoed in the room.
“There is a new Italian restaurant downtown...”
I sighed, stopping to lean against the counter. Kayla glanced at me, one eyebrow raised.
“No? We could always order pizza,” she suggested.
I was about to say something when the doorbell rang. I looked at her questioningly but the curiosity on her face told me she was just as clueless as me. I strode towards the door and the moment I twisted the handle, the door flew open. Catching myself before I fell, my mouth fell open at the sight of Mark holding two boxes of pizza.
Kayla clapped her hands happily. “Yay! Pizza! I’m starving.”
“That’s good to hear. These are extras from the shoot. Take them,” Mark stated, dropping them onto the living room table.
He pulled off his scarf, glancing around the untidy apartment. Kicking the door shut behind me, I frowned as he made himself comfortable. A button was loosened and I could actually feel the tension leave his body as he fell onto the couch. Kayla’s long legs got tangled with his spindly ones. She just shifted to make him more comfortable.
“What’s going on?” I asked as Mark leaned his head back over the head rest.
“I need a place to crash,” he murmured tiredly.
Kayla took a piece of pizza. “What happened to your apartment?”
“Logan’s away and I lost my keys,” he explained, pouting. “I didn’t have anywhere else to go.”
“Where did Logan go?” I asked, strangely curious.
Mark lifted his blonde head, dropping it onto Kayla’s lap. “Some doctor thingy. I don’t really listen to these things.”
I cracked a grin at Mark’s somewhat childish behaviour. “Do you know when he’ll be back?”
Mark’s blue eyes narrowed at my question, making me shiver with the hostility. “You want me gone?”
Kayla stroked his soft hair, smiling down at him. “Of course, she doesn’t. You can stay as long as you want. She’s just concerned that you might not be comfortable here.”
Mark huffed and looked up at the ceiling, stretching his body until his legs hung over one side of the couch. Kayla continued stroking his hair while she ate her pizza. I was surprised Mark was not getting mad that she might get grease on his perfectly quaffed hair.
“You can sleep on the couch,” I told him.
Mark’s blue eyes turned to look at me. “Did something happen?”
